Intro: How to Make a Bluetooth Speaker

UPDATE 8/9/16

This project is now in kit order form on www.kitables.com

Hi, Welcome to my instructable!

Today Ill teach you how to build a DIY Bluetooth speaker. Its extremely easy to make, and great for anyone learning electronics. The best part is you dont need any past experience with electronics! This project is great to practice your soldering skills (Mine clearly need work) and is very fun to use.

I started this project after a nearby neighbor threw away a perfectly good piece of acrylic! Who does that?! Anyway, I recylcled the sheet into a speaker enclosure. If you dont happen to have a piece of acrylic you can buy some online if you would like.

Speaker Features

30m Bluetooth range!

Long Battery life!

Rechargeable!

Loud audio!

Very Cheap to make!

See through case!

Lets Begin!

STEP 1: Watch the Video!

By the way, I plan on trying to upload new projects every month.

STEP 2: Supplies!

Supplies you will need!

- Acrylic sheet: Optional

- Bluetooth USB Module: This thing is awesome. Plus its cheap!

- Micro usb Charger module 5V 1A: Very cheap, and it came with two!

- 3W Amplifier: I love these things.

- 2 Speakers 3W 4Ω: You could also use two 8Ω speakers, it would be clearer sound, but at the cost of lower volume.

- 3.7V Lithium Battery: This is where a project could become very expensive. I recylcled an old phone battery, you could do the same or buy on off amazon.

- Switch: recycled

Once you ordered your parts, then comes the boring part... waiting :( ... takes forever sometimes...

STEP 3: Cut Acrylic

Now cut out your acrylic box!

I used a jigsaw to cut the acrylic into rectangles

The size of your box will depend on the size or your speakers, but for me the dimensions I used were:

6x15 cm (Four rectangles) and 6x6.5 cm (Two Squares)

Now to glue it!

STEP 4: Gluing!

Now its time to glue the pieces together!

You can use hot glue or superglue, they both work extremely well.

Just make sure to glue exactly at 90 degrees. You dont want to mess up with superglue!

Use a straight edge or a big ruler to help you glue it in place.

STEP 5: Speakers!

Before you glue the last acrylic piece together, place it face down and put your speakers on top of it.

Using a sharpie, slowly trace around the speakers edge.

Now using a dremel or any other cutting drill, cut out the marked area. Be sure to sand down all the plastic burrs afterwords

Then use your hot glue gun and glue them in place!

STEP 6: Solder!

Now solder your circuit together!

Its fairly simple, and great practice for soldering. Now you'll probably have a more neater soldering job then I did, but that's what you get for buying "real" equipment. (I bought my old junky soldering iron and roll of solder for $1 at a garage sale:) )

STEP 7: You're Done!

Charger up your speaker using a micro usb cable, flip the switch and start playing your favorite songs! Its really easy to connect to any phone with Bluetooth capabilities.

You did it!

hi , can you help me , i am having issues, i am gettings crackling when i turn the power on, all my connections are solid and correct, is there something i am missing ?

Does polarity matter. If it does, Am I correct in presuming that you are using the red wire as the positive wire on the circuit diagram
hi I'm planning to use 4.2volt li ion batt. with a bit over 6000mah. Can i charge it with phone charger.

you are good .

If you are using lithium ion battery charger module; yes you still can.

As the charger module gives output at 1000mah, using a 2Amps charger would give same charging speed as using a 1Amp charger.

So it would take around 8/9 hours for a full charge a 6000mah battery. And if you are using a lower rating charger (700mah or 800mah) then the charging time will increase.

Do not try to bypass the charger module; unless you got some better rated charger module in mind.

hi, i have made everything like you did but when i try to play music over bluetooth there is a piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii sound and its very ennoying, when i put the volume up the music plays over it but when there is a quiet part in the song it is noticable. when i try to play music over the audio cable (that normally is plugged in the bluetooth module) there is no distrortions. anyone know how i can solve this problem. thanks in advance.

Yes. Add a ground loop isolator to the circuit. I added mine after I posted this tutorial.

thanks for the reply, where can i find a ground loop isolator and where do i place the ground loop isolator in the circuit?

I've heard it's dangerous to combine two lithium ion batteries. You can use regular AA batteries if you don't care about recharging. However don't use too much or too little voltage! Try to get as close as you can to 3.7v
Okay thanks I'm going to start ordering parts, seems like a fun project. Can I buy a bluetooth module on eBay and use that instead of the usb module ? I appreciate it .

Look up some other bluetooth speakers on instructables. There are a bunch of bluetooth modules you can use that are cheap on ebay (and other places). The difference is often in how they're wired, but many should work.

Also, the "USB bluetooth" adapter in this instructable does not appear to use USB for computer connectivity, only as a source of power. So you could connect any 5V power to it for it to work. Or even better; get a smaller module that doesn't have a USB connector which might be easier to solder up. As long as it works on 5V, it should be fine.

Yes. I just bought the USB version because of the price.

i dont get it. the usb bluetooth module is working at 5V how did you get it to work at 3,7? :D

The module works anywhere from 3-5v

Friend, if I put a battery of more than 5V bluetooth burning?

Whats the name of the song

I really want to do this build but I only have 2- 2watt 4ohm speakers lying around. Can I still do it with these speakers or is there something I would need to change to make this build work?

What wire is needed to connect the bluetooth module and the Amp?

The battery is 3.7V but the bluetooth dongle is 5V. How does this work?
