Hi! My name is Summer Wylie and today I am going to teach you how I make a pillow!

You will need the following:

Sewing machine
Thread
Bobbin
Fabric
Cotton stuffing
Scissors
A ruler or measuring board
A pencil (only if you want to mark where to cut)
Straight pins (to hold your fabric together)
Hand sewing needle

Step 1: Fabric

The first thing you want to do is find the right fabric, I like to find a pretty design for the front and I also like using a good solid color for my back of the pillow. As you can see I have an off white fabric with keys on it that has all kinds of designs, which I'm going to use for the front of my pillow. Then for my back I'm using a really soft fabric that is light pink.

Step 2: Measure and Cut

What I did was measure the back side of the fabric and marked it with a pencil, the width of my fabric was 17 inches and my length was 19 inches. It does not really matter what your length and width is, it can be any size you want it to be. After my first and second pieces were measured I used the rotary cutters as seen above to cut it, they do make it easier to cut but it is also easy to go off track.

Step 3: Pinning

When it came to this step I put the two pieces together having them inside out. Then to make sure they do not move while I'm sewing I pinned them together, I left about half an inch or more on the edges so it would only give me a little bit of room to sew as close to the edge as I can. At the place I would stop sewing I left about five inches or less open so that I can turn it inside out and stuff it with cotton.

Step 4: Thread Your Sewing Machine

Next I threaded my sewing machine, Here's how to do it:

Place the presser foot in the upward position. Place a spool of thread on thespool holder. Traveling from the spool holder, across the top of the machine, look for a minimum of one thread guide. Insert the thread in the thread guide. Now look for a tension mechanism. Bring the thread downward to the tension mechanism, slip the thread between the metal disks of the tension mechanism, and travel back upwards with the thread. Look for a take up mechanism. This is the area on the front of the machine which will go up and down, when you turn the hand wheel. Place the thread through the take up lever. Some machines are set up so the thread will slide in to this, others require you to place the thread through a hole. Now the thread will go downward on the left side of the take up lever. Locate and thread any thread guides, leading down to the sewing machine needle. Thread the sewing machine needle. Hold the thread with your left hand and turn the hand wheel. Watch for any thread to flap around. If this happens, you have probably missed a thread guide.

Step 5: Begin Sewing

Now we begin the sewing.. First make sure you put your pressure foot down, then use your hand wheel to lower your needle before using the pedal. Next push on your pedal a few times then hit your reverse button to make sure the beginning of your pillow stays together. Whenever you get to the end on your first side make sure you use your hand wheel to put the needle back into your fabric so that you can turn to do the next side. When your needle is back in the fabric, lift up your pressure foot and turn.

Step 6: After Sewing All the Edges

After you sew all the edges make sure you leave enough room to turn your pillow right side out, before you do that make sure reversed the needle back through the your pillow and the forward again. Next turn your pillow right side out and being to stuff it with cotton.

Step 7: Sew Up the Hole You Left Open

Once you get done stuffing your pillow you can either pin it shut to make it easier to hand sew or you can just get your needle and thread and sew it together. The way I do it is, I pin it together so I can make it where you can barely see where I had to hand sew at. After you pin it together all you have to do is get your sewing needle and thread and just sew it together as best as you can... That is all the steps I do when making a pillow, it takes me about thirty minutes or less because I have made a lot of pillows and other things.
