Have you ever seen a wooden keyboard in a store? Well I like them, but I think they are too expesive. So I thought: I should make one myself! I did and now, to help you also make one, I have made this instructable. I hope it is helpfull and that you also have a wooden keyboard in about a few days.

Step 1: First of All

You have to chose a keyboard that you can take as an example and that you can rebuilt (in wood). You will have to judge for yourself which one you take (one is easyer then the other). For example, a keyboard with many curves is very hard and flat and square keys are less difficult.

Step 2: What's Inside

If you have found a nice keyboard, you have to strip it and look what's on the inside. If it looks something like this, you should be ok! But if it looks different, you may had chosen a difficult keyboard.

Step 3: Measure Everything!

If you start making a template for the lasercutter, you will need to get everything exactly right, so the keys matches the electronics. Otherwise the keyboard will not work. So do this very precise!

Measure:

The space between all the keys
The exact measurements of all the keys
The place where al the corner keys have to be (this is very important, if this goes wrong it will not work)

Step 4: Ready for Inkscape

You are ready to work with Inkscape! First you will need to:

Download and install Inkscape: https://inkscape.org/nl/download/
Get the setup right (I like it to make a frame)
Try to find out how it works and how you can make something (try to make a box that doesn't fall apart, and try not to copy the box in the picture)

Make two documents, one for the bottom and sides and one for the top with the keys:

The bottom: This is not hard, you have to make it the right size and you have to make the inlets (correctly!), those are pretty hard, because they have to fit in correctly!

The sides: They don't have to be very high. Like 20mm (inclusive the protrusions), also here you have to make sure that they are fitting correctly!

The top: This part is the hardest and it will take the longest! So prepare yourself: It will take a long time. You have to keep enough distance between the keys and you have to design every key exactly the same. Every point (on the electronics) and key must be in the exact position where it must be. If you do that right, and you have all the keys (don't forget the LED light holes) you are ready for cutting!

Step 5: Laser Cutting

Just print all the templates and make sure that you have all the parts and that it fits!

While the laser cutter is busy, you can get a wooden board (1mm thick).

Step 6: Assembling

Screw the electronics to the bottom and make sure it is on the right place for the keys to touch them. Don't forget a space for a power cord.
Glue the bottom to the sides. Not the top jet!
Now the top... If you putt the keys in and hold the keyboard upside-down, the keys will fall out. So you have to do something to prevent this:
1. Glue a piece of 1mm board to the bottom of the key (they have to be the same size)
2. They glue an other piece of 1mm board to the bottom of that, this one has to be a bit bigger on all four side (like 0,5-1mm on all the sites)
Now you can glue that to the sides and you should be done!
