Intro: How to Play Gamecube Backups on Your Wii Without a Modchip.

Ever wish you could play those GameCube backups on your Wii? Well with my help you can.

How it works: The Wii has two modes; a wii mode that lets you play wii games and a GameCube mode that restricts the access of the wii to its wii systems and lets you play GameCube games. While in the Gamecube mode it is almost impossible to access most of the normal Wii functions, and most importantly, it is almost impossible to access any homebrew application. The rungcbackup.dol copies the gcbackup launcher to memory and changes to GameCube mode and also patches the DVD read functions in memory, to make reading DVR-r's in Gamecube mode possible. This is technically able to block your wii, but will most likely result in you not being able to play GameCube games, but this can be solved in the future when a GameCube Mios fixer/restorer is released.

Before you do this instructable you need to already have The Homebrew Channel, DVDx, Wii backup launcher 0.3 gamma with cIOS7 on your wii.
Since the process to do that is long and since someone else already posted an instructable how to do that, follow this instructable before you start to do this hack.
Note that the WII backup launcher is unable to play Gamecube backups, that's why you need Gamecube backup launcher to play Gamecube backups.

I AM NOT THE AUTHOR OF THIS PROGRAM.

Wiigator (The actually author of Gamecube backup launcher 0.1 Theta/Xi and Wii backup launcher 0.3 gamma.) has a warning for all of us.
It is prohibited to use any of the software to illegally copy games, they are intended only to create and play legal backups of games that you own. In some countries or regions it is still illegal to make copies of games

that you own, check with your local authorities if you are unsure. I cannot be held responsible for any misuse of these programs. The use of any of the above software is done so at your own risk. If you mess

something up or anything undesirable (i.e.: loss of warranty, brick, lawsuits, jail time) happens because of any of these programs, it is your own fault. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!

If you have any questions at all it's better if you ask before you start messing with your Wii.

STEP 1: Assemble Your Tools.

You will need these items to successfully modify your wii to play Gamecube backups.

SD Card (Not SDHC)
Computer with SD card reader
Gamcube controller (to play the Gamecube games.)
DVD-r that can burned at 3x.
DVD-r burner. (imgburn)
RAR extractor (7zip )
Gamecube ISOs

Theta or Xi or .2
(All three versions work, with varying compatibility, some games work with Xi but not with .2,you'll just have to experiment.)

STEP 2: Move to Files to an SD Card.

First, download the Gamecube backup launcher 0.2 RAR file to your desktop or a folder you can easily find. Then extract it with Winrar or 7-Zip.
Open the Gamecube backup launcher 0.2 Xi folder you got from extracting the RAR file, read the text file for some info, and open the "CONTENTS" folder.
Insert your wii SD card (with the Homebrew channel files and folders on it) into your computer.

Copy the "Apps" folder and the "RVL-mios-v8.wad" to the root of your SD card, if asked to merge folders, click yes.

Well you're done here! Just remove the SD card from your computer and insert it into the Wii.

STEP 3: Installing It on Your Wii.

First turn on your wii. Select the homebrew channel from the Wii menu.
Then find the "cMIOS-res1-Installer" and click it. The screen will go black for a second and then some text will appear.

Press A on your wii remote to start the installation process.
Use the d-pad to select WAD installation mode.
Press A again.

Some text will appear, and wait until you see "Success". (This could take a minute).
Press any button to restart your Wii.
Insert your Gamecube backup DVD into your Wii.
Go to Homebrew channel again.
Click on GC Backup Launcher and then click load.

The screen will go green for a second while the Backup launcher loads.
Plug in your Gamecube controller and Gamecube memory card.
Press the A button on your Gamecube controller to auto-detect.
The screen will go green for a second and hopefully the backup will start.

Play your Gamecube Backup!

STEP 4: Burning the Games.

Before you can play a Gamecube Backup you need to have a DVD-r and a Gamecube ISO. I can't tell you where to get the ISO but once you have it it's a simple matter to burn it to a DVD-r. You can use a regular 4.7gb DVD-r or use 1.37 gb mini disk (good luck finding any).

You can make a multi disk 4.7gb DVD-r to not use so many DVD's.
Why waste a 4.7 gb disk on a 1.36 gb game? You can easily shrink several games and place them on your 4.7gb dvd-r.

First download this.

Extract the files from the RAR.

Open the Gamecube multidisk ISO creator.

Use the ISO tab to add multiple games.

Check the shrink box if you want to fit extra games.

Select your Wii region (PAL,NTSC or JAPAN)

Click "Create Multiple Game ISO".

Name you file.

Select where you want to save.

Open imgburn.

Click on tools, then settings, a new window will pop up. Go to the write tab and uncheck the enable burn proof tab.

Close the settings window, click on write image file to desk, click on file and browse for source file, find the Gamecube ISO file, click on it once, then click open.

Change the write speed to 3x.

Insert your DVD and press the file to DVD button.

It will take about half and hour to burn a 4.7 gb size file.

STEP 5: Troubleshooting.

If any problems pop up I'll add them to this list.

Question: "Every time I start Gamecube backup launcher it gets a freaky green screen and reboots my wii."
Answer: " You either didn't install the miospatcher or forgot to put the Gamecube backup DVD in the wii before you started the Gamecube backup Homebrew app. "

Question: "Do DVD+R or DVD+RW DVDs work?"
Answer: "I had great success with both DVD+R and DVD-R, but I couldn't get my wii to read a DVD+RW DVD."

Question: "I play a game and it's black and white with flashing bars"
Answer: "You're playing a game that has a different region than your Wii, or a different region than your tv. "

Question: "My Gamecube files are GCMs not ISOs."
Answer: "You need to right click them, and rename the GCM part into ISO."

Question: "How do I switch games in a multidisk?"
Answer: "After you load Gamecube backup launcher use the D-pad on your Gamecube controller."

Question: "Can I play PAL or JAP games on my NTSC Wii or vise versa??"
Answer: "I didn't test that out , I'm pretty sure you can't yet but it won't hurt your Wii if you try.."

Question: "Which games are compatible?"
Answer: "Here is a list of most games that were tested. I personally can say that the NTSC versions of Pikmin, Pikmin 2 and Ty the Tasmanian tiger 3 work."

Question: "When I start GC backup launcher I get freaky lines and need to restart my Wii."
Answer: "This happens randomly, just restart the Wii and it should be fine."

Question: "MY SAVES DON'T WORK and/or ARE GONE!!!!"
Answer: "You probably downloaded Gamecube Backup launcher Theta and updated to Gamecube Backup launcher Xi. The save files created by Theta were named incorrectly and will not work in Xi. The problem has been fixed in Xi though, so it should work in future Gamecube backup launcher versions. "

Question: "There are people in your instructable that keeps commenting on your instructable with links to a site with something called 'HomebreWare' or 'Homebrew unlock hack', is it some sort of scam? "
Answer: "Yes, it most definitely is a scam. HomebreWare was started by some people that wanted to make money off the already free Homebrew Channel. They charge you a grotesque amount of money for a useless piece of software with claims and testimonials of how good it works only to disappoint you when it fails miserable on your updated wii firmware and bricks your Wii. Always remember, THE HOMEBREW CHANNEL IS FREE.

Which 'ible is the one for installing the other stuff to support this one
My Mario golf:Toadstool tour iso crashes after the intro. Is it a problem if i dont have a MEMORY CARD?
will the wii still function normally? or will the regular gamecube setup be screwed?
i downloaded the files, but what in the heck am i supposed to put on the sd card and how? Wii version: 4.2U, dont think that matters but jic.
First off you need to home brew your Wii in order for this to work. To do that you need a SD card 2GB max. Then look up the rest on Google. After you have learned how to home brew your Wii and have done it. These steps should be entirely easy. I'm going to test this out in a few minutes, ill see if it works for myself.
I'm not a pirate, and I'm doing this only to fit more games on 1 disc (I own he originals.)
what rate do I write data to the disc?

DVD+R can screw up the laser on the wii over a long period of time. (it still works though, but be careful)
I get an error when its reading my DVD. erre 0x3208 or something and it restarts my wii
for those who can't get this working, the newer wiis have a disk drive that CAN NOT PLAY BACKUPS OF ANY KIND FROM A SOFTMOD, in order to play gamecube or wii backups, you need a modchip
one thing you can do is use a usb loader, those work perfectly for wii games, but unfortunately don't work for gamecube games
PLEASE HELP when i put in any correctly burnt disk i think it says error 186 ir 187 and when i put in an actual gamecube disk it gives me the same error but loads after a few seconds
mine sticks at the Green screen no matter what mode i load it in.. its a compatible game (Paper Mario 1000 Year Door) and i did the Trucha Bug Restorer with no error on my 4.2U menu. am i doing something wrong?
I have 4.1U and I did the guide you posted for the trucha bug. Instead of 2011 errors now I get 1035 when I try to install this mios. Can you help me?
I have the same problem as Hillsidebro5. At first I thought it was a problem with the disc, but I burnt it again to a different disc and got the same result.
please help... well i cant load the cmios installer it just goes blank forever and disconnects my wiiremote
Well when i start the backup launcher after installing the mios thing when the games in and then i start it the screen once it loads the game turns black and white then copys itself over and over again like overlapping itself please help.
I like Pikmins too, hope that they gona do Pikmin 3 :)
Didn't work. xD; I'll explain some problems I noticed.

I tried installing the WAD installation, but one thing was wrong.

"Installing Custom MIOS, please wait...
        >> Installing ticket... ERROR! (ret = 2011)

[SUCCESS]: Custom MIOS installed successfully."

So I'm not sure if it's installed or not. All I can say it, I updated my Wii when I played New Super Mario Bros. Wii. So I'm not sure if that's why or not.

I'm positive I have an NTSC-U rom. Not sure if Paper Mario is compatible or not, seeing as the list was down. But anyway, I tried to run the game on the Backup runner and I got a giant green screen which restarted my Wii.

One of the three must have happened.

1. The Custom MIOS didn't install.
2. I burned the ISO wrong.
3. The game isn't compatable.

Any help, pl0x?
Well you must have firmware 4 or higher if you get an error 2011.
The error happens when you try to install an ios that relies on a trucha bug that was patched by Nintendo. You need to restore the trucha bug on your Wii console before you can install any CIOS or MIOS. Here is a good tutorial to restore the trucha bug on your Wii if you have firmware 4.0 or 4.1: sites.google.com/site/completesg/hacking-guide/trucha
Follow this tutorial ONLY if you have FIRMWARE 4.2 ON YOUR WII:
sites.google.com/site/completesg/hacking-guide/trucha-bug-4-2

After you're done restoring the trucha bug on your Wii, install the Mios again, and it should work.
This guide seems very helpful, but there's one problem. It wants me to download V532, but only gives the option to download V523. Error on their part, or do I actually need v532?
