Introduction: How to Start Blacksmithing(Cheap)
You want to be a blacksmith huh?But your wallet looks like this.When you think of blacksmithing, you think of , 20 diffrent types of hammer ,atleast 1 power hammer,gas forge or 110lbs anvil.And you think to yourself like "I don't have the budget to but all that" or "Ain't nobody got time for that!".But,Blacksmithing can be cheap.Whenyou start to get the hang of it,you can maybe buy some more hammers or maybe a power hammer.
Step 1: Anvils
Anvils are an important thing when it comes to blacksmithing.You don't need a heavy 110lbs anvil.All you need is a brick of steel either pick it up from a scrap yard or buy one.Thi s saves you a lot of money.
Step 2: Hammers
Hammers are also an important thing when it comes to blacksmithing.A cheap way is a buy a ball peen hammer,It must at least be 2 lbs if you're a beginner but you also don't want too heavy.
Step 3: Forge
By far,this is the most important thing when blacksmithing because it''shard to forge cold metal.If you want a traditional way to forge steel,use a coal forge.you can also use this gas forge made by Nighthawkinlight.If you ask me which one is better,I prefer the coal forge because of the way it looks.
Step 4: Tongs
Now for a not so important tool but still kinda important.You don't need that much tongs.All you need are pliers,they can act as your tongs.
Step 5: Safety's First
You heard the phrase"Safety's first".and it is true.When you do blacksmithing,Some sparks of steel will come out eventually.Wear a long sleeve shirt and Jeans,make sure you're tucked in your shirt,if not, wear a leather apron.Wear gloves too.
Step 6: Materials
Next, you can't make a blade with nothing! so you need some materials,files , rasps , rebar or railroad spikes can be great things to practice bladesmithing or blacksmithing.
Step 7: Last Step!!!
This is the last step to this!!!All you need is AMBITION!!!Ideas too.Without ideas,you are just a poser,a wannabe.So,i'm not gonna let you be a poser and i'm gonna give you some ideas.Katanas,Longswords,Hammers,Knives,Daggers,ect.There are many possible things for you to forge.And when you do get the hang of it,Start to do weapons from games or movies,just like the youtube MAN AT ARMS.
