Introduction: IDN1002 Final Project:Beautiful Useful

This is the final product rendering of our team, which makes our kitchen more organic, and every small jar can be used for fermentation or planting. There is liquid in the big bottle to keep the temperature of the tube

Step 1: 24hr Everything I Touched

This is the photographic evidence of all the items I have contacted during the 24-hour period and where I have gone.

Step 2: Data Analysis

Through 24 hours of photos and data analysis, I created two icons to show my mood in the past 24 hours and where I went most, what project I spent the most time, I can better through this data The choice of the product I want to design.

Step 3: Benchmarking

Through the analysis of the data, my team and I summarized 20 problems. Through these data I have summarized four products that can be redesigned, supermarket carts, storage carts, e-cigarettes and trash cans. Then I analyzed the four existing products to find out where they needed improvement and started designing.

Step 4: Ideation Sketches1

These sketches show my thoughts. People often go to the supermarket but the things we need to buy are hard to find in every corner of the supermarket. We have to rescan the bags at the same time when we check out, and finally we have to carry heavy items. Go to the car. So I designed a smart supermarket cart, he can guide us to bring the items you want, and you can scan the payment when we put the item into the cart. When the payment is finished, there is a conveyor belt in the car to transport the goods directly to the car. .

Step 5: Ideation Sketches2

This is my second ideas, Through the data analysis, I found we need a lot of space to storage stuff in different area. For example, in the bedroom we need storage charger, phone cables, perfume, in the kitchen we need to storage gloves knifes. But we always need to go to another room to get this things. So I want to design a smart storage cart, which can follow me around the house, each area it go, it will automatically scan the room and open the certain storage space, so we can get everything we need without go to other room.

Step 6: Ideation Sketches3--electronic Cigarette

Third idea: electronic cigarette, my idea is design a e-cigarette that actually burn the tabbaco but we don’t need a lighter, so it save our money and time to.

Step 7: Ideation Sketches4--Compress Rubbish Bin

After group discussion, we decided to follow the rubbish bin idea, My trash can is compressed, which saves a lot of trash can and reduces the number of times we dump garbage. This compressing rubbish bin design to function as a set, which divided by rubbish, food/kitchen, cans/ bottles

The rubbish bin functioned by spinning the bottom part.

Step 8: Mock-up

Through the previous sketches, I made some models that showed my thoughts and basic shapes.

Step 9: Final Group Ideation- Fermentation Cup

After rubbish bin, our group change the direction to the fermenting cups, we want to use kitchen space more organic and more useful. Our aim is to design a beautifully useful intervention within the contemporary kitchen space, creating a functional product by which natural produce may be incorporated into modern cooking whilst also highlighting and advertising the inherent organic beauty of such.

Step 10: Functional Prototype

After making the model, I started making a functional prototype. I made a kitchen fermentation cup using the discarded cigarette case and the cross. This material is very environmentally friendly and can be recycled.

Step 11: Modeling

After defining the sketches and models, I used Maya to model. He can help me to trace the details and improve all the functions. I can also measure in the software.

Step 12: Rendering

3d model rendering can be used to determine the materials needed for the final product to be produced.

Step 13: Final Product Making

It is very easy to drill holes in glass bottles with diamond drills, and then manually sand them to the right size to fit the jars that are placed in the holes.

Step 14: Holder

We made the brackets for the fermented cups using wood and iron bars.

Step 15: Testing

Test the spacing of the brackets, then drill holes in the wood and secure the iron bars.

Step 16: Put Jars in the Hole

Fix the polished glass disease, put the jar into the hole and seal all the gaps with silicone.

Step 17: Final Product Pre Looking

Step 18: User Scenario

On the cap we can use chalk to writ down the fermenting date, so we can counting how many days that this jars already fermented, and easy to know when can it able to eat. so when we use it, there is a small hook on the jars’s cap, so we don’t worry that our chopstick will pollution the fermenting food. also inside the bottle is oil, we can easily open and put them in the food. Even we go out for a picnic, this set of condiment is very handy and easy to put in our travel bag.
