Introduction: IPad Air Auto Sleep/wake Case Mod

Put your iPad Air to sleep when you close your case (if you bought a case that does not do this)

I AM JUST SHOWING YOU WHAT I DID, IT MAY STILL BREAK MY iPAD !!

Thanks to lilitab.com for finding the locations of the iPad Air Wake/Sleep magnetic switch locations!

I found their article on this after buying a case for the iPad Air and noticed that it did not put the iPad to sleep when closed. Thanks to lilitabs' article (http://www.lilitab.com) i was able to mod the case with a couple of 10mm round neodymium magnets.


Step 1: Locations

Unlike previous models, the iPad Air has 2 reversed polarity magnets instead of one, both are required to be triggered to put the iPad to sleep.

The rough locations of these sensors are indicated in this picture.

You need to reverse the magnets so have one north and one south, not sure which one is which but if it doesn't work one way, try the opposite way.

I put the two magnets together and marked the two sides that attracted each other with a pen. I used them marked sides as they were opposite.


Step 2: Magnets

I wanted to buy 2 round neodymium magnets 10mm in diameter and 1mm thick but I found an old neodymium magnet knocking around which was pulled out of a dead hard drive. (and I couldn't wait for the magmets to arrive!)

I cut it into 3 x 10mm parts and rounded them off with a pair of cutters.

Step 3: Install Magnets

After peeling apart the case, i played around with the locations until they were spot on. I tried closing the case and the iPad went to sleep.

I also cut the cardboard away to allow the magnets to fit flush.


Step 4: Glue Back Together

Once in place and tested, I used some epoxy glue to stick it all back together again.

Seems to work fine, just hope it doesent kill my iPad!!
