Intro: Inlay a Wood Floor

My Kitchen had terrible nasty tile. My wife ripped up all the tile and with the tile came up some of the wood floor as well. This was not her fault. Most home owners who are trying something new for the first time will cut corners anywhere.....except when it comes to glue. No, glue they use in excess. I have even found glue in the electrical systems at my house. Here is how I fixed my floor and made an inlay, Enjoy!

If I had an Epilog Laser I think you would see a lot more inlays, and a great deal of acrylic work. I would also use it to convert my pen and ink sketches into some pretty neat tiles and accent pieces. I have some ideas for some table saw modifications and some parts to better utilize a nail gun as well. Thank you for your consideration!

STEP 1: The Concept

You will need:

Biscuit/Plate Joiner
Wood Glue
Various woods (I had to buy a little)
Clamps (I never have enough, ever!)
Circular saw
Chisels
Table Saw
Miter Saw
Time

STEP 2: The Angled Slats

This is a very fluid project I jut made it up as I went along

First make the angled slats. These make up a large part of the artistic design.

Start by joining 1.5"W x 48"L x .75"Thick boards. When joining this way, always use an even number of boards. You use an even number so you can join them end to end to make your pattern. This will make much more sense later.

You have to make two sets, one larger than the first, and mirrored. (See Images)

STEP 3: The Center

I wanted a decorative center , but I didn't know what to do. So I used a knot  and some old wood as my centerpiece.

STEP 4: The Outer Parts

This was a very fluid project, I just made it up as I went I urge you to do the same.

STEP 5: The Install

Install is very simple:

scribe it.

cut out the shape

secure old floor with brad nails

secure new  floor with brad nails

hide your sins

Really nice idea, don't know why someone posted that this is over the top. I am already stretching the ideas in my head what more can be done with this. An optical illusion perhaps. Great instructable!

Did you save any of the hardwood you removed to make way for the inlay? Any good pieces can be used in case another part of the floor needs patching. Like if you need to cover a decommissioned vent.

I have installed alarm systems in turn of the century homes in St.Louis, Mo. and numerous high end homes of the period had in-lays in various rooms. It was a real treat to see and install the alarm systems. In my case when I finished you could not tell that I had removed wood work hid the wiring and re-installed the wood work. As to sensors I also made up coverings that matched the wood work or the wall coverings and again you could never tell I had ever been there.
