In this tutorial, I will show you how to handcraft a whimsical, glittery unicorn-style horn that can be used in a variety of costumes. This process features InstaMorph, a lightweight thermoplastic which acts like clay when warm, but when it cools, it's a strong plastic.

For this Instructable, you need:

1/3 a bag (or less) of InstaMorph
Glitter
a metal or plastic Bowl
a tea kettle, or other way of getting water to 150 degrees F

Step 1: Prepare the InstaMorph & Form a V

After following these instructions for proper preparation of InstaMorph, remove the blob of material from the water with a spoon or other utensil. Be careful not to burn your hands!

Once the blob of InstaMorph begins to cool, start stretching and rolling the material through your fingers. Your goal is to create one long "snake" of material.

You may need to dip the rod of InstaMorph back into the hot water to increase stretch/pliability as you go. As you work with the material, boil some backup water to use once things cool down.

Bend the material into an uneven V, where one end is shorter than the other. Take the shorter end, and dip it into the hot water again. Then, thin and stretch this side of the V so that it is overall a bit longer than the other, but thinner. This thinner piece of the V will be the spiral on the horn.

Quick Tips:

Make the material very thin at the corner of the V
Prepare the thicker end of the material for what you intend to attach the horn to (such as: hats, headbands, masks, action figures, pets)

Step 2: Fold, Add Glitter, and Smooth

Once your V is formed, smooth and even - make sure your water is hot enough, and dip the thinner, longer side of your V into the hot water, leaving the thicker end above water.

When the strip becomes mostly transparent, remove it from the water. Starting at the center of the V, spiral the pliable strip around the firm side. Try to connect the two pieces as you go down to the bottom, but don't worry if they have trouble sticking.

Tap a bit of glitter into your hand, about the size of a US $0.25. Dip the whole piece of twisted InstaMorph back into the bowl for a bit more softness. Remove the material before it gets too visibly transparent, and press the whole horn through your palm with the glitter. Smooth together the edges of the spiral, pressing in the glitter bits as you go.

Let the InstaMorph cool and completely harden once you've decided on your spiral style, pointiness, and overall shape. You may want to connect the horn to sunglasses, headbands, hats, headphones, or other materials. Simply heat up the end of your InstaMorph horn in hot water, and mold it to the connector you need!

Rock out with your awesome glittery unicorn (or narwhal) horn!

Quick Tips:

It is easiest to heat up and work on one part at a time - either the top point of the horn, or the base of the horn. Its harder to work with the material when the entire horn is warm and pliable.
You can try lots of options: curve, shape, sharpness, glitteryness, etc - and it doesn't even have to be your "final" decision, because you can always mush the InstaMorph down and start your project from scratch simply with boiling water! Awesome!
