Wie online kaarten gebruikt heeft vast gemerkt dat de kaarten niet altijd allemaal even actueel zijn. Daar kun je eenvoudig verandering in brengen door je eigen luchtfoto’s te maken met een vlieger en deze online te delen. Dit staat beter bekend als kitemapping en is een vorm van Citizen Science: wetenschap uitgevoerd door niet-wetenschappers.

Hierna leggen we in stappen uit hoe je zelf luchtfoto’s maakt met behulp van een vlieger, hoe je met deze foto’s een kaart creëert en vervolgens online deelt met anderen. Who uses online maps has probably noticed that these are not always up-to-date. You can easily alter this situation yourself, by making your own aerial photography by using a kite and share these online. This is also known as kitemapping and is a kind of Citizen Science.

After this, we will explain how you can do this yourself with a camera and a kite, create a map and share it online. There is an extensive English manual available with photos and videos at Public Laboratory: bit.ly/kitemapping.

What do you need for this?

Digital camera with continuous mode (see step 2)
Kite
Empty soda bottle (large)
Rubber bands (2x)
Rope
Musketon hook
Scissors / knife (take care!)
Tape
Small plastic plate

Step 1: Plastic Bottle / Plastic Fles

Neem een lege petfles en snijd deze door midden.

Take an empty soda bottle and cut it in half.

Step 2: Place the Camera / Camera Plaatsen

Check of je de functie continuous mode op je digitale camera hebt. Hiermee blijft de camera constant foto’s maken, ook in de lucht. De functie is te herkennen aan een symbooltje met de drie rechthoeken.

Hang twee stevige elastieken om de camera en stop de camera in de petfles.

Check whether your digital camera has the the function continuous mode. In this mode, the camera will keep making photo, also when airborn. The function normally has an icon that shows three rectangles.

Now put two thick rubber bands tightly around both ends of your camera and put the camera in the bottle.

Step 3: Securing the Camera / Bevestiging Camera

Maak ter beveiliging van de camera eventueel een ondergrond vast aan de petfles. Dit kan in de vorm van een rond plastic plaatje met een gat, zodat de lens van de camera daar doorheen past.

Maak aan de bovenkant van de fles twee gaten en bevestig aan beide kanten een touw.

To secure the camera in the bottle you can attach a ground plate to the bottle. This can be a round piece of plastic with a hole in the middle that fits around the camera lens. Attach the plate to the bottle with tape.

Make two holes in the upper section of the bottle and attach a piece of rope at both sides.

Step 4: Attach to Kite / Bevestigen Aan Vlieger

Pak een nieuw stuk touw. Dit bevestig je uiteindelijk aan de vlieger. Steek dit touw via de bovenzijde van de petfles naar binnen. Bevestig de elastieken om de camera aan het touw en trek dit strak vast.

Verbind ook de andere touwtjes aan de bovenkant aan het touw.

Get a new piece of rope. This piece will eventually be attached to your kite. Put this rope through the top end of the bottle and attach it to the rubber bands holding the camera and pull tightly.

Also attach the other two pieces of rope on the upper side of the bottle to the rope.
