Introduction: Knex Pool Table Instructions

     Hi, this is a collaboration between me (knextremist) and KneXtreme on instructions for his amazing pool table. I built his table from the pictures that he posted and upon asking him if I could post instructions, he suggested a collaboration, so, that is what we are doing. I built his table, then proceeded to modify certain things and strengthen inner supports. There are, in this instructable, certain pieces that are optional. I do show instructions for these said pieces. Many of my modifications were made due to the fact that I needed to accommodate the use of the thicker red tubing. KneXtreme used the thinner orange tubing, Instructions will be shown for the use of both.

     Alright so, the stats given by KneXtreme can be modified slightly. I used thicker dowels for pool cues to make them stronger (1/2"). Due to this, my cue holder is modified as well. I also used a slightly thicker board with larger dimensions which will be specified in image notes throughout the instructable. Also, the width and length of the board can differ slightly without causing any catastrophe.

Thanks and without further ado, the Knex Pool Table.

Step 1: Materials

Here are the materials required to build this pool table.

-A bunch of K'nex. (Sorry, no parts list,  I'm too lazy) (One optional broken piece.)
-A board no smaller than 3 foot by 6 foot, I purchased a 5 foot by 8 foot luann board, which will be cut down to size. Recommended thickness: 1/8 inch- 5 mm. Note that that is a very small margin of difference. If you decide to use a thicker board then you will have to find a different way to secure your board to the table.
-A saw of some kind. Recommended: table saw, jig saw, or circular saw. (To cut the board.) A razor knife could be used instead, I suppose.
-Hot glue (Optional)
-Sugru (Optional)
-Duct tape
-Paint
-Masking tape
-Permanent marker
-A dime
-I purchased 2 yards length of felt. It was more than enough to stretch over the board.
-Two, 1 yard long wooden dowels to use as cues. If you have normal pool cues then don't build the holder. Any thickness. Though, instructions will be shown for 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch thicknesses.
-1 nice, undamaged golf ball.
-Some clear tape. -----------------------------------------\

-Some track splices, or small mini K'nex rods. ---/  These are only for if you need to connect two pieces of tubing.
-Some patience. (Lots of patience)

We will be starting with the base of the table.

Step 2: Base

You will be making the base for the table.

Materials: Knex.

These are the legs of the table and the supports, obviously. This leg has the easiest instructions. The other legs' instructions are a bit more primitive. However, the instructions are still detailed. Have at it.

Step 7: The Triangle

Here is the triangle which holds all of the pool balls very well.

Materials: Knex.

7. Attach three hinges like so to the right side of one of the orange parts.
8. Attach the left side of another orange part.
9. Add three hinges to the right side of the same orange piece attached in step 8.
10. Add the third orange piece.
11. Attach the last three hinges to the right side of the last orange piece.
12. Now you should have this.
13. Bend the assembly like so.
14. Close the triangle up and your done.
15. Go to this attachment on the first leg.
16. Slide the triangle on like so.

I don't really know what's next. I think it's the pool cue holders.

You are now done with the hardest part and now that your pool table is beginning to take shape, take a break, eat a cookie, and stick your fingers in some ice. :)

Step 20: Prepping the Playing Surface

In this step, I will show how to make your actual surface for play. I used a 5mm thick luann board which works perfectly. I purchased it in one large 8 foot by 5 foot sheet at Home Depot. It will be cut down to a size labeled in the image notes. 2 yard lengths of felt will suffice. Also duct tape to hold down the felt. I attempted to use a staple gun to hold down my felt, but the staples would go through the back of the board. If your board is thicker than 5mm then a staple gun might just work.

Materials: Felt, duct tape, board, staple gun (if applicable), sand paper, scissors.

Step 21: Attach the Playing Surface

Almost done!

Materials: Knex.

Step 22: The Rest of the Tubing

Here you will be adding the tubing that acts as a bumper on the walls of the table. This step will also show how to add tubing to your ball sorter to ensure that it works.

Materials: Knex, tubing, clear tape/ mini Knex (if required).

Wall Tubing

1. Start your tubing in any spot except for any of the pockets. When you attach the tubing, attach it like so. Halfway on.
2. Attach the tubing as you go around in a circle and when you reach a corner pocket, do as such.
3. Close up. Try to attach the tubing to the Y-connector at the back of the pocket. If you have the thinner tubing, it will attach to the Y-connector very easily.
4. Move along and when you reach a middle pocket, do as such.
5. Begin to turn the tubing and add a grey connector onto the tubing.
6. Attach the piece here.
7. Loop the tubing around and add a second grey connector to your tubing.
8. Attach your connector here. Make sure that you make the tubing close enough to the blue rod in the back of the pocket so that you get a nice looking pocket.
9. Continue around the table. If your tubing is too short, do as such. Cut it very carefully so that the tube ends halfway on a connector.
10. Close up.
11. Add some more tubing like so.
12. Move along.
13. Keep going.

17. Aaaaaaaannnnnnd STOP. Don't worry we'll buff out those scratches. :)

Sorter Tubing

1. Start your tubing here and move it up or down the sorter until you find the length that works for YOUR table. It will be different for everyone's depending on your golf ball's weight, size, and how flat your ground is. This was my sweet spot. To test, just move make the tubing shorter or longer and throw your golf ball and your pool balls down ALL of the holes to see if they sort correctly.
2. Close up of where mine is. Keep in mind that your's may be significantly further up.

4. If you use the thinner tubing, direct your attention to this here hole.
5. Stick in a Y-connector like so and extend your tubing so that it attaches to that Y-connector. Do the same on the other side.
6. It should sort like so, sending the golf ball below and the pool ball above.
7. Extend your tubing down the golf ball path to the end.

Keep in mind that every once in awhile, you may or may not need to adjust the length of the tubing on your sorter. This may be caused by using a different ball, moving your table, or if something is disconnected. I am happy to say that you have completed the construction of your Knex pool table!!!

Step 23: Tipping Your Pool Cues

You are so close just keep swimming.

Materials: Wooden dowels, hot glue (unless you use Sugru), knife, (unless you use Sugru), Sugru (if you choose to buy it).

1. Your materials. I used hot glue and not Sugru. For those of you who want to use Sugru, the second to last paragraph on this step states how.
2. Grab a dowel and start adding hot glue onto one end.
3. Roll the dowel...
4. ...between your fingers...
5. ...as you add more hot glue. This will spread it evenly and make it look nicer.
6. Stop at about this much.
7. Let it half-dry and...
8. ...apply pressure with your thumb to flatten and smooth it out. If your thumb sticks to the glue and the glue starts to stretch, you did not let it dry enough. Just peel the glue off the dowel and try again. It may take a few tries. If you push on the glue and it doesn't mold then you waited too long. Just peel the glue off the dowel and try again. Once again, it may take a few tries.

11. Grab your knife and trim/ cut off any excess.

13. Now do the same to the other dowel.
14. Put the cues in the holder.

If y'all are going to use Sugru then get just a small piece and roll it into a ball. Make sure not to roll it too much or it may begin to dry out. Place the ball on the end of the cue and apply slight pressure until it begins to mold around the stick just a bit and flatten out in the front. Once you get it to your desired thickness and flatness, repeat with the other dowel and leave the cues in a dry area until the Sugru cements to the dowel. This may take several hours. Wash your hands!

Now you are done with everything except for painting. That's the next step.

Step 24: Painting the Billiard Balls

Take it away KneXtreme!

Materials: 15 Original size Knex balls (yellow works best), paints (acrylic works best), paint brush(es), masking tape, paint mixing tray, knife, drying rack of some kind.

     Hi. This is KneXtreme. This step will show you how to make the billiard balls. Only classic Knex balls with the holes will work. If you are going to buy more Knex balls for this project I recommend buying the color yellow, because it's easier to paint over. 

Preparing to Paint:
     Before you start to paint you'll need to buy acrylic paint, unless you already have some. The colors needed are listed below. I suggest getting a couple of extra cheap paint mixing trays to set the Knex balls on to dry. The balls and their corresponding numbers are listed below as well.

Step 25: Modifications

Here is the step for you guys. If you can think of any mods or improvements, place them in the comments here and we will hopefully edit them right into this step! Also post a picture of your finished table and we'll display it here. Leave any feedback here as well!
