Introduction: LED Dome Lights for Your Dakota/Ram

About: 23 year old guy. Work at Run All about low and fast trucks. I live for myself, and love my girl.

I wanted some LEDs for my dome lights in my 2000 Dodge Dakota, and knew that Putco sold Vehicle Specific Dome Light Kits but not for my truck. I decided to get their universal kit from my work, and then make that work.

I have a 2003 Dodge Ram that has the same dome light as well.

This is part number 980116PUT from Putco, and can be purchased at
Feel free to email me if you plan on getting these and I'll see if I can help you out at all!

Step 1: Measure the Dome Light Area

First thing I needed to do was measure the available area for the LED Panel. For this application, it happened to be 1.25" x 2.25".

Note:These bulbs are universal, and there are many sizes available. If you plan on installing these on another vehicle, use a peice of cardboard to figure out the size that will fit. The sizes are:

75" x 2.5" (12 LEDs)        Part Number: 980113PUT
1.25" x 1.25 (16 LEDs)    Part Number: 980114PUT
1.25" x 2" (20 LEDs)         Part Number: 980115PUT
1.25" x 2.25" (24 LEDs)    Part Number: 980116PUT
1.5" x .75" (8 LEDs)           Part Number: 980111PUT
1" x 1" (9 LEDs)                  Part Number: 980112PUT

Step 2: Order the Lights

Like I said, I got them from

Step 3: Find the Right Connector

Putco will include a few adapters, you'll need the one with the 194 connector.

Each of the bulbs have the same connector on the other end to plug into the LED panel.

Step 4: Plug the Connectors

Plug the male and female connectors together.

Step 5: Tape in the LED Panel

After cleaning the dome light (I used rubbing alcohol since it dries fast), take the red backing off of the LED Light Panel and then tape it to the Dome Light.

Step 6: Put It Back Together.

Close it and you are good. You don't need to take it all the way out like I did, but if you did, reinstall it!
