LED Headphone Jack Tester

I repair electronics everyday where I work, mainly tablets (iPads) but it ranges from laptops to phones. As a technician I make sure to test every part of a unit that I'm working on to make sure it’s in 100% working condition. When I first started we used regular headphones to check the headphone jack, which is fine but the wires always get tangled and having to take earbuds in and out all day was irritating. So I decided to make a headphone jack tester.

This basic headphone jack tester worked just fine. Simply plug in and play some kind of sound out of the unit, if you hear the sound it works. Very Basic, but saves time and works very well.

I came to realize that there is a flaw in this design though. You can hear the sound but what if one side doesn't work? For example: typically on the iPads the right headphone side would stop working requiring a the headphone jack to be replaced. So I decided to try and figure out a way to make it where there is a visual and audible way to know that both the right and left sides of the headphone jack works. I came across a few schematics for LED music synced circuits, and thats where I came up with the LED Headphone Jack Tester.

I'm not sure how well this circuit works being that i'm not a electronics technician, I just like making things, tearing stuff apart and putting it back together, I just made this with a basic understanding of electronic and some research. I have not made this circuit yet but will try to make a prototype soon. I'm wanting it to be small and not to bulky, I made a simple drawing of what the prototype would look like based off of the simple one I have already made.

What I would like to know and the main reason I am posting this on here is to see if there would be a market for this tester? And would the circuit I made work? I know from my experience in the electronic repair business it comes in very handy, but to some it might just be too complicated for something as simple as testing a headphone jack using headphones instead of this tester.

    LOL glad you answered his question, because like a said in my post im no electronics expert, I just do basics.

    On mine though would a 9v battery be too much for 2 leds? I want them to get enough power to light numerous times, but also I don't want to have to change the battery numerous times, is there an easy way to instal maybe a rechargeable battery like a cell phone battery into my circuit and add a charging port? anyone want to tackle that schematic, but make it easy enough for me to understand lol.

    Hi buddy great work!but i need some help ,I need to build a solar external battery pack to charge my iphone.I wanna use a 7905 linear regulator,2x 3.6v lg chem li-ion rechargeable batteries and a 6v salar panel

    That's not going to ever work. That regulator won't output the right voltage. If you're set on using a regulator, pick up an lm7805 from radioshack (like 2 bucks) and use this little schematic.


    Of course that doesn't include the solar cells, but a 6v cell won't charge a 9v battery. You also need at least 9v to use the regulator so you can't just use 4 AA batteries.

    Another option is the mintyboost, which is a simplate DC-DC boost converter. It takes your input voltage (2-5v) boosts it and regulates it at 5v which is used in usb. That way you could use some rechargeable aa batteries, and the solar cell that you already have.
