This speaker design was developed from unusual results in a Chladni experiment.
It was developed for Project 2 of Industrial Design Studio 2.
- 1 x 5.7mm Speaker Driver
- 1 x 5.3W Universal Amplifier
- 1 x Mono Aux Cord
- 1 x USB A Adapter / Port
- Soldering Iron and your choice of Solder
- 1 x 3D Printer
- Your choice of filament (PLA recommended)
Step 1: Download the STL File
Download the file and load it into the slicing software used for your available 3D printer.
Recommended settings: Have supports enabled, a large raft, and infill at 20%. Recommended layer height is 0.3mm.
Step 2: Connect Electrical Components
Your print should take approximately 6 hours at full scale.
It is a good idea to use this time to get your electrical components wired together as follows:
- Connect the positive and negative input terminals from the universal amp to your aux cord.
- Connect your power supply (USB port) to the negative terminals of both the speaker driver and amplifier output.
- Connect the voltage wire from the amplifier to the positive terminal of the power supply.
- Connect the positive terminal of the speaker driver to the positive output of the amplifier.
This should make your speaker functional when plugged in to both a power supply and music vessel.
Step 3: Remove Supports From Your Print
Once your print has successfully finished, allow the print to cool briefly before gently removing the supports from the project. These should remove easily, however do not be rough with any remaining supports or rough edges, as these can be sanded down or removed using a scalpel or bevel tool.
Step 4: Applying the Electronics
If your print was scaled at 100%, the electrical components should fit snugly within the inner chamber of the speaker.
The large hole in the baseplate is for the USB port (power supply), while the small hole is for the AUX cord. These can both be seen in the image above.
The vertical divots along the inside of the casing are for the amplifier to slide down.
The speaker driver should fit above these components, holding them in place when a slight amount of pressure is applied to the rim of the speaker. Remember never to push on the soft surface of the speaker driver as this can cause permanent and irreparable damage to your components.
Step 5: Enjoy Your Speaker!
Your speaker should now be functional and ready to go!
