Introduction: Large 'Floating' Bed
Here's a bed I put together as a present for my girlfriend. I don't have the final cost or hours worked but both went over expectation. These are really poor images from the finished product as our current room doesn't have much extra space to the sides. I also haven't yet installed the LED lights under the frame which will give the bed a floating feel. This was made some time ago but I will try recall the process. I started out with a lots of sketches and then a digital mock-up.
Step 1: Box Construction
I made three boxes from 1/3 inch MDF. Boxes measured 2000x250x250ml. There is also a bedside table roughly 500x250x250 (excluding the base)
Screws all countersunk and filled with Polyfilla. Ends and joints filled and sanded.
Step 2: Headboard & Assembly
Headboard 2000x1000 MDF with supporting frame behind.
Holes cut in order to access bolts.
All bolted together through the holes seen by 3x10ml bolts in each end.
Feet made from wood scraps.
Step 3: Painting/Sanding
Screws all countersunk and filled with Polyfilla. Ends and joints filled and sanded.
Three coats of black undercoat applied and sanded between each coat. Black gloss applied (poorly, due to containments in the air and brush).
Step 4: Finishing
Headboard coated with Argos camping mats and mock leather stapled at the back.
I then bolted two lengths of 3x2'' half way up the inside of the frame. these supported the lats, allowing the mattress to sink in half way into the frame.
Note: The finish was very labour intensive, matte black would be much easier but may not go as well with the LEDs when they arrive. Also it takes up a lot of floor space so make sure you don't get evicted from large house half way through the build.
If anyone is thinking about making something like this I can look back for more detailed measurements/dimensions.
