Introduction: Laser Cut Glasses Case

About: Mechanical engineering student interested in 3D printing, CAD design, crcuits, microcontrollers and conding

This unique glasses case is the perfect present for any special occasion. The outer part of the case is made of robust wood to be resilient against force. Inside, the case is covered with soft fleece to protect the glass against scratches. Even though it looks very special, it is quite easy to make.

Step 1: Tools and Materials

Tools required

  • Laser Cutter
  • Sanding Paper
  • Screw Clamps
  • Srew Driver
  • Sanding Paper
  • Paintbrush

Materials required

  • 4mm Plywood (beech, poplar)
  • Fleece 1mm to 2mm
  • Wood glue
  • Liquid glue
  • Clear Varnish

Step 2: Lasercutting

At first, we have to cut out the three wooden parts A (4mm plywood), the three fleece parts B and the support parts C (5mm MDF) to glue the fleece later on. For the the support parts, we need eleven oval parts and two thinner connectors. Please apply the material settings recommended for your laser cutter to achieve to best cutting results.

Step 3: Sanding and Painting

To prepare the surface of the wooden parts A, it is recommended to use fine sanding paper. Afterwards, clear vanish is used to paint two coats to make the wood resistant against fluids. It also highlights the texture of the wood.

Step 4: Gluing Wooden Parts I

For the first gluing step, we only add wood glue to the red marked areas. This allows us to open the case for the later steps. Then, you put the parts together and “close” the case. To improve the gluing, you can use screw clamps.

Step 5: Gluing the Vleece I

Now it is time to glue the oval fleece side parts B on the inside of the case with the liquid glue. Therefore you have to open the case again, as the wood glue was only added on the bottom side. To glue the fleece, the liquid glue is used.

Step 6: Gluing Wooden Parts II

In this step, we add wood glue to the red marked areas. We close the case again and press the parts together with the clamps.

Step 7: Gluing the Fleece II

To glue the long fleece part, we use the support parts we cutted before. You have to add the liquid glue on the fleece part and push it into the case with a screw driver. Then we insert the support block to push the fleece against the inside of the cover. Then we close the case and wait until the glue ist dry. Finally, we can open the case again and pull out the support block.

Your case is finished!!!

I hope you enjoyed this instructable and have some fun with your new glasses case.
