Introduction: Leather Thumb Guard for Wood Carving

About: Tinkerer, is that a word?
I love to carve but my thumbs love to bleed. Sure you can buy thumb guards but what's the fun in that?!

Step 1: Materials and Tools

This is pretty much all you need. You can used recycled leather or buy some from the craft store.

Step 2: Cutting and Sizing

Basically all you have to do is cut your leather for your thumb. The hole is important. Your thumb will go through the bottom into the guard. This prevents it from slipping off.

Step 3: Makn' Holes

Make to holes on all four corners about 1/4" apart from one another. If you have a leather punch, great!, I used a drill. I know the picture only shows one on each side but you need two.

Step 4: Lacing

The pictures say it all.
Wait until you fit test it before you make it tight.

Step 5: Trim It!!!!

Trim of some of the leather to reduce the bulk.
Warning!!!!! Remove your thumb first.

Step 6: Done!!

And there you have, your very own thumb guard.

Remember! Even with a thumb guard you need to be extremely careful with carving knives. Unless they are garbage they can be extremely sharp!!!
