Introduction: Lets Make a ROV!

As the dictionary describes it a ROV is an underwater remotely operated vehicle, it is a mobile robot designed for aquatic work environments. The goal for the ROV is to be able to move underwater, using a switch box powered by batteries.

Materials that are needed to build the ROV:

- Plastic box

- Battery pack

- Goop

- PVC pipe

- 20 ft Ethernet cable

- 3 DC motors

- 3 Rocker switches

Tools that are needed:

- Drill

- Soldering Iron

- Cutting tools

- 3D Printer

Step 1: Step 1: Cutting the Box and Placing the Switches

The first step into building the control box for the ROV is to measure the switches, then marks need to be made on the control box that match the measurements of the switches. Using a Drill make four holes on each side of the box to make it easier to cut, then trace the marked lines with a cutter to cut the box and stick the switches in. In case the holes are too big, you can use a hot glue gone to glue the switches in so they do not come out of the box.

Step 2: Step 2: Soldering the Wires

In order for the control box to be able to move up and down and forward and back, the switches need to be wired to the battery pack. The way to do this is by soldering the negative and positive wires on to the switch and connecting them to the positive and negative wires on the battery pack. Doing this will make the switches jump and cause the motors move. You also need to connect the wires from the 20 ft Ethernet cable to the switches, use different colored wires for each switch, this connects the motors to the switches.

Step 3: Step 3: Cutting Out the PVC Pipe and Connecting the Wires to the Motors

Now it is time to connect the motors to the other end of the 20 ft Ethernet cable, you to this by soldering the different colored wires to the motors. You need to measure the motors and cut 3 PVC pipe covers for each more, you need to measure the opening of the inside of the PVC pipe to see if the motors fit in nicely, if they don't use a carving tool or anything else that you have to make a hole, to make the hole bigger. After the motors are in use goop to water proof the motors but don't cover up the center of to motor or your motor will not be able to move.

Step 4: Step 4: Making the 3D Design

To make the ROV body I first sketched out my design then I used the Autodesk Inventor to make the model. This process may vary depending on how your model is, but keep in mind that your model should be able to go under water without drowning, so it should not be too heavy, and it should not be so light that it floats back up. It should also have 3 holes for the motors to be placed in, the motors are whats going to make the ROV move so place them accordingly. I also used the Autodesk Inventor to make my propellors, which will be placed on each motor to make the ROV move. After the designing is done a 3D printer is needed to print the design, which can take a few hours depending on the design.

Step 5: Step 5: Testing

After my design was done printing I put the propellors on my motors, and put it in the water. my design was a bit too light to go in the water, but I put some weights on it and it went down and up and front and back. I hope you try making your own ROV and have fun designing and be creative.
