Introduction: Light Saber USB Charger

I do not know about you, but my Iphone suffers from a power problem where it seems to drain the battery a lot faster than it used too. I think it has something to do with the current version of iOS7. Anyway, I need to keep my phone plugged into a power source while at work or home. But when I'm on the road or in a meeting, wall hugging with a power adapter and court is not possible. So, I purchased a power charger. As soon as I saw the thing, it reminded me of a lightsaber. So, I altered it to look like one.

Step 1: The Battery Charger

Since I just wanted a quick project and nothing too time consuming I decided to just buy an inexpensive batter charger off Amazon. Its about 3 1/2 inches long and silver. Different companies make different colors so if you want to get a black or gold or pink one, you have a lot of choices.

Step 2: 3D Parts

Next I needed the parts to make it look like a lightsaber. I downloaded a 3D .stl file from Thingiverse which prints off all the parts so you can make your own lightsaber. There are several files to choose from which allow you print a lightsaber. Just make sure you pick one that prints the individual parts and not the entire lightsaber in one large plastic item.

The parts were not proportionate for the batter charger so after a little bit of trial and error, I reduced them by 50% (should have tried that first) and the parts seem just about right. So I printed off the cap and the ribs. I contemplated printing off the buttons and strap, but since I intend to use this on a day-to-day basis in my briefcase and for work, I thought having small protruding parts which could easily get snapped off to be a negative. So I just tell people the jedi who uses this one uses the force to activate an internal switch.

Step 3: Superglue

The glue gun just does not use the right type of glue for this projects so I needed something stronger. I used Gorilla Glue's superglue gel. Very strong. I placed it in my small table vice and just glued each piece. Nothing special about that.

Step 4: All Done

No I can charge my iphone anywhere and I get some interesting looks from people in meetings who see me pull out a lightsaber and plug my phone into it.
