Introduction: Light-up Pocket Fan

This is a fun, quick little build. The fan is switched on and off with one switch, and the other switch controls the LED lights, with a Red and White setting. The lights and fan work together or separately. Power out over the summer? Cool off and light up the room all at the same time!

Supplies

-3V mini electric motor

-9V battery connector

-9V battery

-Wire and wire cutter/stripper

-Soldering Iron and Solder

-LED's (2 different color) 5V

-On/Off switch

-Three level switch

-Propeller

-4 Panels of wood (laser cutter if available)

-Super Glue

-Hinge

Step 1: Create Circuit From 9V Battery to Motor

-Want to connect the negative (black) to one side of motor, red wire to other side

-Solder each wire to the positive and negative node

(Note: Once circuit is closed, the motor will run. Do not want propellor attached to motor at this time)

-When you test that the motor and battery work, cut the red wire in half and strip both the ends.

Step 2: Connect Switch to Red Wires

-One end of the red wire connects to the switch node, repeat with the other. Solder into place.

-The switch should now turn on and off the motor.

Step 3: Start the LED Circuits

-Cut the black wire in half and solder a new wire together in the middle (all 3 ends should be connected).

-Connect your new wire to the middle of the 3-level switch (this will be the negative part of light circuit).

-Solder the wires into place. NOTE: Do not let the wires be touching other ends of the switch, as it may short the circuit.

Step 4: Close One LED Loop

-Choose one strand of LED lights.

-Follow the diagram above with Green alligator clip wire (positive) and Red alligator clip wire (negative)

-Connect wire from the Positive (+) node on LED string to the Positive (red) wire on the battery. Can connect to switch. (NOTE: in the diagram, they are clipped. I solder new wires later, but use the alligator clips for clarity).

-With the positive connected to the red wire, we now need the negative node to connect to our 3 Level switch (From step 3).

-Solder the wire from the negative node up to one side of the switch as shown in the picture above. NOTE: be sure the wires do not touch on the LED or on the switch to avoid short circuit.

Step 5: Repeat With Different Color LED Strand

-Repeat step 4 with new wire and new strand of LED's (different color than previous)

-Reminders: wire should not touch on the LED's, connect negative to negative (black) battery wire and positive to the 3 way switch

-The light switch works by having the middle be a closed circuit, and the bottom and top both close one of the loops. If the switch is in the top, one LED strand will turn on. If the switch is on the bottom, the other turns on. Middle is off.

-After these are all connected, you should have both switches working.

Step 6: Laser Cut (or Hand Cut) Rectangles for Fan

-Laser cut the pannels, 4 for the side and squares for the top. Make sure you measure your switches and motors and cut holes big enough for them to pop out.

Step 7: Attach Motor and Switches to Panels

-Put the switches and motor into the holes, position so it sits evenly

-Use super glue on the sides to keep it in place (NOTE: be careful with superglue on fingers and switch, do not want to glue the switch and stop it from moving)

Step 8: Put Everything Together

-Glue together the panels. Make sure the inner workings are positioned with the light wires able to leave from the bottom, and the battery being towards the bottom (for accessibility)

-Use super glue along the edges, hold into place for 30sec - 1 minute

-Move wires around as necessary, make sure not to move/tear off the solder

Step 9: Wrap LED's Around the Base

-Can attach them up the sides, wrapped around the edge, etc. As long as the wires come out from the bottom, feel free to put the lights however you like. I wrapped them around under the switch.

-Peel the back of the LED strip to reveal sticky side. Use glue if not sticking well enough.

-The switches should all work now, and both light strands should turn on when flipping the light switch.

Step 10: Create Top

-With the square and the hinge, carefully place the lid over the top and glue the hinge on the bae and on the lid. Make sure it opens and closes the right way when putting the hinge on.
