Introduction: LightBox

This is a project that involves the use of touch to make a sound using a Makey Makey. The project uses two boxes, one as a ground and one as a regular box, to create a sound. This is just a portion of the bigger picture that we envision to make in the future. Materials are listed below.

  • Cardboard
  • Cardboard cutter / Scissors
  • Hot Glue Gun / Tape
  • Diffusion Cloth
  • Copper Tape
  • Wires
  • Alligator Clips
  • Multi-Color LED Strips
  • Makey Makey
  • Laptop

Step 1: Cut Cardboard

You start by making the frame of the box. You cut out 7.5x7.5in. and 9x9in. boxes. All the boxes are 3in. in depth.

Step 2: Add Fabric

Now add diffusion cloth on one side of the boxes. This is where the lights will shine through. Hot glue the cloth to the box.

Step 3: Create Hole for Wire

Create a small hole on the side of both boxes. Small anof so that a wire will fit through it. Put wire through the hole so that only a small amount of exposed wire is sticking out. Bend the exposed wire so it is flush with the box.

Step 4: Copper Tape

Apply one strip of copper tape around the boxes. Make sure the exposed wire is covered and in contact with the copper tape. You can add more copper tape to make the contact strip wider if you want.

Step 5: Insert Makey Makey

The wire that you installed in the bigger box is where you will install the makey makey. Connect the wire to the "Ground" and an alligator clip to a key of your choice. The other end of the alligator clip will be connected onto the wire of the smaller box. Now plug in the makey makey into your laptop.

Step 6: Insert Lights

Take your multicolor LED light strip and tape/hot glue it around the inside of the box. Now plug in the light strip into your laptop.

Step 7: Scratch

Download and open up scratch. This is where you will program the LightBox.
When (Key) is pressed
Sound (Meow)
This program will make a "Meow" sound when the key block (larger box) is held and the smaller box is taped on.
