Log Box/case

My first Instructable, I hope you enjoy it

First of all, I want to mention that English is not my mother or father tongue, so I apologize in advance for any grammar mistake, or if it’s hard to understand/follow.

Therefore I’ll be writing in English and Spanish (mother tongue) for any bilingual maker out there like me.

Any correction will be more than appreciated.

So I was browsing the net, like most of us nowadays, and I saw this video from the maker DiResta. I’ve always followed his work and I think he is amazing, go check him.

I got the idea from that video (hope it’s ok to everyone), I wanted to have a log case, or box, for keeping anything, because it will look cool in my room, so I started thinking about doing one.

To finish the intro, in this Instructable I won’t be telling you exactly how to do the log case/box, because there are infinite ways of accomplish this, I’m giving the idea, and how I did it, feel free to do it your way!

Primero, me gustaría mencionar que el inglés no es mi lengua maternal o paterna, así que me disculpo por adelantado si cometo algún error gramatical, o si es complicado de entender/seguir.

Por eso escribiré en inglés tanto como en castellano (lengua materna) para cualquier maker bilingüe por la página, como yo.

Cualquier corrección será más que agradecida.

Pues estaba yo en internet, como muchos hoy en día, cuando vi este vídeo del maker DiResta. Siempre he seguido su trabajo y pienso que es increible, echadle un vistazo.

Tuve la idea gracias a ese video (espero que a nadie le importe), quería un tronco (leño), para guardar cualquier cosa, porque quedaría chulo en mi habitación, así pues pensé en hacer uno.

Para finalizar la intro, en este Instructable no pretendo explicar exactamente cómo hacer uno, porque hay infinitas maneras de conseguirlo, daré la idea y como lo hice yo, hacedlo a vuestra manera si queréis!

Step 1: Thinking/Pensando

Mine wouldn’t have a vertical cut and open

in half, because the things kept inside wouldn’t stay the same way I left them. If I rested the log landscape it will roll, making the inside to move.

I decided to make the log stand and make a horizontal cut separating the top from main body.

As I don’t have the same power tools as DiResta, I used what I have, and it was complicated, but satisfying. What I used where some techniques as you’ll see later.

The closing will be hinged and with magnets to make it a stable close. (Like DiResta did)

With this in mind, I got started, and as I got going I had to change or modify things.

Also, remember to clean after yourself, and even more if you’re working in a place that doesn’t belong to you, as I did. I worked on my grandpas’ basement, and to help myself keep it clean, I placed a trash bag under my work table, and the trash fell directly to the bag, or I had to push a little.

Let’s start!

El que yo tenía pensado hacer no tendría un corte vertical ni se abriría por la mitad, porque las cosas que guarde dentro no estarían igual cuando lo volviera a abrir. Si lo dejara tumbado, empezaría a rodar, haciendo que el interior se remueva.

Decidí que el mío se mantendría de pie, verticalmente y haría un corte horizontal, separando la parte superior de la parte principal.

Como no dispongo de las misma herramientas que DiResta, utilicé lo que tenía, fue complicado, pero satisfactorio. Lo que use de este señor fueron algunas técnicas como veréis adelante.

El Sistema de cerrado será con una bisagra e imanes para que se mantenga cerrado. (Como DiResta)

Con esto en mente, comencé, y mientras iba hacienda tuve que cambiar o modificar cosillas.

También, recordad limpiar lo que ensuciáis, y más si estáis trabajando en un lugar que no os pertenece, como yo. Yo trabaje en la guardilla de mis abuelos, y para ayudarme a mantenerlo todo limpio, situé una bolsa de basura debajo de la mesa de trabajo, y la basura caía directamente a la bolsa, o tenía que empujarla un poco.

Empecemos pues!

Step 2: Log Selection/Selección Del Tronco

This depends on you, the size you like, the

natural shape it comes with, but I recommend getting a dry log, for easier manipulation.

Mine was a little wet, but I left it inside and it dried out fast, I suppose that letting a wet log in ambient temperature will dry it.

You’ll want a flat base so it can stand without falling or moving.

Basically any log will do, so grab the one that talks back.

Esto depende de ti, el tamaño que quieras, la forma natural que tenga, pero recomiendo que sea un tronco seco para una manipulación más sencilla.

El mío estaba algo mojado, pero lo deje secar y no tardó en estar seco, supongo que dejando un tronco a temperatura ambiente lo seca.

Busca uno con la base plana para que pueda mantenerse de pie sin caerse ni moverse.

Realmente cualquier tronco sirve, así que coge el primero que te conteste.

Step 3: Skin Work/Trabajando La Piel

Now this step is optional, if you like how your log looks like as it is, skip to step 5. But, if you would like to take the cortex (crust) and let the inside to be looked, read this, it might help.

I peeled it out, because I thought it was nicer that way and I could smooth it.

The tools I used to accomplish this step where a bevel edge chisel (image 2 and 3) and that other tool, I’m sorry, I don’t know the name, I know how to use it and it was there, but not the name (image 1). I know now thanks to user brentonallen (thanks again mate!) it's a gouge!But as I said, if you know another way, or don’t have this tools, do as you can. I used those because it’s what I’ve got.

Este paso es opcional, si te gusta tu tronco tal y como es, salta hasta el paso 5. Pero si te gustaría quitarle la corteza (la piel) y dejar que el interior se vea, lee esto, puede ayudar.

Le quité la corteza al mío, porque pensé que estaba mejor de esta manera y lo podría alisar.

Las herramientas que empleé para conseguir este paso fueron un bisel cincel (imágenes 2 y 3) y la otra herramienta, lo siento, no sé cómo se llama, se utilizarla y la tenía para uso, pero no su nombre (imagen 1). Pero como ya dije, si conoces otra manera o no dispones de estas herramientas, hazlo como puedas. Utilicé esas herramientas porque es lo que tenía.

Step 4: Smooth That Log/Alisa Ese Leño

Once I got where I liked, it’s time to make

it smoother and safer, you know, that I could grab it without getting a sliver (splinter). So SAND that log, a lot, or at least I had to sand a lot. I used a wood grinder (image 1) for big imperfections and sand paper (800 I think) to smooth it. I got it really smooth.

Una vez llegué donde me gustaba, era hora de alisarlo y hacerlo seguro, ya saben, que se pueda agarrar sin clavarse una astilla. Así que LIJA a ese leño, mucho, o al menos yo tuve que lijar bastante. Utilicé una lija de madera para las imperfecciones grandes y papel de lija (800 creo) para alisarlo. Me quedó muy liso.

Step 5: From Log to Box/case

With a cool looking log, it’s time to make

it a box (or case, I haven’t decided how to name it yet).

First I separated what will be the main body from the top by cutting where I liked.

I used a normal handsaw and a miter box to make sure it was a flat and clean cut.

Con un tronco molón, es hora de hacerlo una caja.

Primero separé lo que sería la parte principal de la superior cortando a la altura que me parecía adecuada. Empleé una sierra normal y una caja de ingletes para asegurarme de que era un corte limpio y plano.

Step 6: Making the Hole/Haciendo El Agujero

I got a pen and marked how big I wanted the

hole, and where. Keep in mind a space for the closing system, the hinges and magnets.

Once I draw how the hole will be, I got my drill and got started, but I did not have a drill the same size, not even close, so I decided to grab a little one, make holes and then with a bigger drill make it the size I desired.

DON’T DO THAT, it’s a waste of time and it didn’t work for me, I ended up buying a bigger drill, 3 cm diameter. It wasn’t the size I wanted, but I got a dremel, so I figured I could drill, and then enlarge it by grinding the sides.

I did that and I was happy with the result, it was going great. BUT (there have to be one) when everything goes as I plan, something has to happen, like I’m cursed or something. This time, my dremel stopped working, don’t know how, don’t know why. I tried to identify what was going on, but I couldn’t, and now that I’ve finished, I saw an Instructable that might make it work (https://www.instructables.com/id/Dremel-Repair/).

The depth and wide depends on you, but I was thinking on keeping a pen inside maybe, so it had to be like 4 inches deep, and the top had to be drilled as well.

In order to know where to drill on the top, so it can match with the main body, I used masking tape and taped the outside of the hole. Then I painted the limits of the hole and closed the thing. This leaved a painting of the size of the hole, and where it is.

Making the hole on the top made it weight less, and that’s good for the closing system.

I found this video and it’s about a man doing a lamp shade out of wood. He uses a great technique to make the hole, if you own a machine like the one he uses, you can try to make the hole like him.

Cogí un lápiz o boli y marqué el tamaño del agujero y donde estaría situado. Piensa en dejar un espacio para el sistema de cerrado, la bisagra y el iman.

Una vez dibujado cómo sería el agujero, cojí mi taladro y empecé, pero no tenia una broca del mismo tamaño, ni de cerca, así que decidí coger una más pequeña, hacer distintos agujeros y luego con una broca mayor conseguir el tamaño deseado.

NO HAGAIS ESO, es una pérdida de tiempo y no me funciono a mí, acabé comprando una broca mayor, 3 cm de diámetro. No era el tamaño que deseaba, pero tenía un dremel, así que me imagine que podría taladrar y después lijar los costados para agrandar la amplitud.

Hice eso y estaba feliz con el resultado, todo iba genial. PERO (tiene que haber uno) cuando todo va tal y como planeo, algo pasa, como si estuviera maldito. Esta evz mi dremel dejó de funcionar, no se como ni porque. Intente localizar que había ocurrido, pero no pude, y ahora que ya he finalizado, vi un Instructable recién que puede que lo resucite (https://www.instructables.com/id/Dremel-Repair/).

La amplitud y profundidad del agujero depende de ti, yo tenía pensado en guardar un boli dentro tal vez, así que tendría que ser unos 4 pulgadas de profundidad, y la parte superior tendría que ser taladrada también.

Para saber dónde agujerear la tapa, para que coincide con la parte principal, utilicé cinta adhesiva (masking tape) y la puse por alrededor del agujero. Entonces pinté los límites del agujero y puse la tapa encima, cerrándolo. Esto hizo que se pintase una marca del tamaño del agujero y donde estaba situado.

Hacer el agujero a la tapa hizo que pesara menos, y eso es Bueno para el Sistema de cerrado.

Encontré este vídeo y es de una hombre que hace una pantalla de lámpara con un tronco. Utiliza una gran técnica para hacer el agujero, si posees una maquina como la de él, podrías probar esa técnica para hacer el agujero.

Step 7: Natural Secret Spot/Lugar Secreto Natural

This step may be unique. As I was drilling

I felt some wood falling on the bottom, and I saw a different color of wood on the bottom, like it was rotten or something, I don’t know. The thing is, that part wasn’t as hard, and it fell easily, so I took it all away and it seemed big enough to keep a little secret in there.

Drilling deeper and deeper made the secret spot connect to the main hole, and I didn’t want that, it has to be secret, can’t be seen from above.

So I grabbed the drill and measured the diameter on cardboard, cut it out and glued to the bottom of the main hole, it didn’t cover everything, a little of the secret hole is seen, but it covered enough.

I could put an Icelandic bill, 1000 kr. But I had to fold it a lot, so yes, it’s really small, but at least it’s something. =)

Este paso puede ser único. Mientras taladraba, note algo de madera cayendo desde la parte inferior, y me di cuenta de que había un color distinto de madera, como si estuviera podrida o algo, no sé. La cosa es, que esa parte no era tan dura, y la quite sin problemas. Al quitarla parecía grande suficiente como para guardar un pequeño secreto.

Taladrando más y más, hizo que el sitio secreto se conectase con el agujero principal, y no quería eso, tiene que ser un secreto, no puede ser visto desde arriba.

Así pues, cogí la broca y medí el diámetro en cartón, lo corté y pegué al fondo del agujero principal. No lo cubría todo, un poco del sitio secreto se puede ver, pero está bastante cubierto.

Fui capaz de meter un billete Islandés, 1000 kr. Pero lo doble bastante, así que, sí, es muy pequeño, pero al menos es algo. =)

Step 8: Make It Stand/Haciendo Que Se Mantenga De Pie

This Ible is going to my desktop, so I

wanted to stand still, but my bottom wasn’t flat. The first I thought was to cut it perfect flat, but it was not possible without cutting too much of the log.

Therefore I decided to make a base where it will stand, and use magnets to join it with the log. The base is made from a log wider than the main one, I cut one centimeter more or less. Cutting this I used the saw and the miter box, as I did to divide the log, this way the bottom of the base would be perfect flat, and it will stand still.

Trace around the shape of the log on what it’s the top of the base, I then removed a little, make it deep. I drilled the entire shape and then I used bevel edge chisel and a hammer to make it possible. It was hard, but it was going well. I recommend to check every time that the log fits nice, and then keep going, and correct the places where it doesn’t fit.

I was almost done making the base, when I pushed too hard, and it broke. Twice. But nothing’s stopping me, and also it didn’t break entirely, so I finished and then glued everything to its place, I refused to start again, it was hard with my tools, so glue saved me. I used some wood glue that my grandma had around.

Este Ible va a mi escritorio, así pues quería que se mantuviera de pie, pero mi parte inferior no era plana. Lo primero que se me ocurrió fue cortarlo de manera que quede perfectamente plano, pero era imposible hacerlo sin cortar demasiado.

Por eso decidí crear una base donde se mantendría sujeto con imanes. La base está hecha con un tronco de diámetro mayor que el principal, y corté un centímetro de grosor aproximadamente. Utilicé la sierra y la caja de ingletes, así la base seria completamente plana y estaría estable encima de la mesa.

Pinta el contorno del tronco principal encima de la base para saber dónde ira posicionado, y donde tendrás que quitar Madera. Para hacerlo un poco profundo y así que el tronco encaje en la base, taladra un poco todo el contorno y utilicé el bisel cincel y un martillo para perfeccionar. Fue complicado y difícil, pero me iba bien. Recomiendo ir probando cada vez que el tronco encaja bien, y después continuar corrigiendo los sitios donde no encaja del todo.

Estaba a punto de terminar la base, cuando apreté demasiado fuerte, y se rompió. Dos veces. Pero no me doy por vencido, y además no se rompió entero, así que termine y pegué todo en su sitio, me negaba a empezar de nuevo, era difícil con mis herramientas hacerlo, así que el pegamento me salvo. Empleé pegamento de madera que mi abuela tenia por ahí.

Step 9: Unite With Magnets/Unir Con Imanes

By this time, I had the project divided

into three, the top, the main body and the base.

I’ll want to take the main body from the base in order to get to the secret spot, and I’ll need to take the top so I can reach what’s inside the main body, that’s why I used magnets.

To make sure that the magnets where drilled in the right place, I positioned one, and when it was glued I put the other above, paint it and let the magnet paint the other part, and then drilled. (I used the same method that DiResta). It didn’t show exactly where it was, but I managed to make it fit.

Don’t forget that magnets have polarity, be careful and glue them in a way that they touch north with south. Painting the part that’s going inside the hole helped me to know.

My magnets where neodymium, very strong, and that helped to make it look like one, and to maintain the shape even downward. I used two in the base and one on the top. A total of 6 (counting the ones that go in the main log).

This way the main body will be joined strong enough to make it believe it’s the same piece, and I can slide the top and leave it in the side if something doesn’t fit, or take it out and close it entirely.

I used UHU fast and strong glue, to glue the magnets, and I drilled 5 mm deep and 1 cm wide to fit the magnets inside.

I know I said I was going to use hinges, and I did. But it was my first time using them, so it got difficult, and when I got it, it didn’t close completely because the screws where touching.

So, Magnets: 1 Hinges: 0

Por entonces tenía el proyecto dividido en 3 partes, la base, la principal y la tapa.

Querré sacar la parte principal de la base para poder coger y guardar cosas en mi lugar secreto y tender que sacar la tapa para poder guardar mis cosas dentro, por eso utilicé imanes.

Para asegurarme de que los imanes estaban en el lugar correcto, coloqué primero uno y una vez pegado, puse el otro imán encima, lo pinté y deje que el imán pintase la otra parte del tronco. (Es la misma técnica que DiResta). No se veía muy bien la marca, pero me las arreglé para que encajara.

No olviden que los imanes tienen polos, cuidado al pegarlos, verificad que están norte con sud. Pintar la parte que irá dentro del agujero me ayudó a saberlo.

Mis imanes son neodimio, muy fuertes, y eso ayudo a que pareciera una pieza y que se mantuviera incluso boca abajo. Utilicé dos en la base y uno en la tapa. Un total de 6 (contando los que iban en el tronco principal)

De esta manera, la parte principal está bien sujeta y podré deslizar la tapa y dejarla de lado en el caso de que algo no quepa, o cogerla y cerrarlo del todo. Utilicé UHU super glue, para pegar los imanes, y taladré 5 mm profundo y 1 cm ancho aproximadamente, para que los imanes cupieran.

Sé que dije que iba a utilizar bisagras, y las utilicé. Pero al ser mi primera vez utilizándolas, fue un poco complicado y cuando lo conseguí, no se cerraba para nada porque los tornillos se tocaban e impedían que se cerrase adecuadamente.

Así pues, Imanes: 1 Bisagras: 0

Step 10: Finishing/Finalizando

I sanded out a little more, because some parts stopped being so smooth. And then I varnish painted. I’ve seen a lot of people use a rag or a cloth to apply it, so I liked to try. It didn’t work as well as I thought, maybe because of the cloth I was using. So I ended up using a big brush, and it was done in a minute.

This is optional, I did it because I believe it gives an impressive and professional look.

To finish the thing, I placed 4 furniture protectors so it slides well, and also it covered a little of the broken part of the base.

Lijé un pelín más, porque algunas partes dejaron de estar alisadas. Después lo pinte con barniz para madera. He visto a mucha gente utilizar trapos para aplicarlo, así que lo quise probar. No funcionó tan bien como me imaginaba, tal vez fue por el trapo que empleé. Así pues acabé utilizando un pincel grande y lo terminé en un minute.

Esto es opcional, yo lo hice porque creo que le da un toque profesional.

Para finalizar la cosa, coloqué 4 protectores para muebles para que deslice a gusto y también tapaba alguna imperfección, como la rotura de la base.

Eso es todo, aprecio mucho si lo han leído entero, o si quiera si lo clicaron para verlo por encima.
