Logitech Performance MX: Fix Middle Click

Hey
this is how to fix the middle click of your Logitech Performance MX mouse.

Normally if you press on the wheel, the wheel should go down and press a button. That doesn't work too well on some models of the performance mx.
So if you put a little bit of hot glue on the wheel container, the container can reach more easily the button on the PCB. This is what you will do at this tutorial. You should be able to follow this tutorial easily if you have your Performance MX in front of you.

This is for people who:
  * have some technical knowledge
  * don't care about loosing warranty

You will need:
  * Screwdriver
  * Hot glue

Ready? OK let's start!

Step 1: Open Your Mouse

To open do the following steps:

*Turn mouse off
*Remove battery
*Remove these sliders (Carefully!)
*Unscrew the 4 screws

Then carefully open the Mouse.

Step 2: [Optional] Disconnect Top

For more comfortable working just plug this cable out. (take a look at the photo)

Step 3: Disassembly of the Wheel Container

Pull out this plastic pin shown in the picture. After this you can lift the wheel up, but be careful with the two clips.

Step 4: Fix the Wheel

Now you just need some hot glue. Put a SMALL point (really  just a small point) of hot glue at the position seen at the photo.

After you did this, you will be able to press the small button on the PCB with less force.

Step 5: Reassemble the Mouse

Reassemble the mouse by doing the steps backwards. You can test the mouse before closing it completely. If you didn't used the right amount of glue just try again.

After this you can really enjoy your Performance MX mouse! Have fun!

Your tutorial is awesome!!! Thanks so much, I was thinking sending it back to Logitech but it would have take decades. I used 5 minutes epoxy (instead of hotglue) and a needle to put a small hard point on the existing one. Now it works perfectly (well, as it should actually).

My trouble was a broken left-click switch. I found this not-so-related tutorial. What do you know: I found the a very good picture of the switches. I now ordered those, and know how to open the mouse without breaking it in the process!

Awesome!!! I just unboxed my mouse and immediately noticed this problem. The last thing I wanted is to having to deal with the warranty, especially if there is no guarantee that a replacement won't suffer from the same thing.
But instead of hot glue I have used UV LED-hardening liquid adhesive which is much easier to work with and allows for better control the amount of the clue applied.

I also wanted to note I figured out what the problem is here and why the mouse button's middle click is lackluster. The point at which the plastic hits the button trigger is too far BACK and only hits the edge. This is because the black bracket at the back of the wheel, where the black plastic piece goes through to hold the wheel in place (also, it is directly in front of the battery container), is too tight and/or too far back. If you loosen the two black screws that hold down this bracket, then put a little effort into pushing the top part of the black bracket toward the front of the mouse, you can bend it a little so that the mouse is mounted EVERY SO SLIGHTLY more forward. This will align the button with the actual trigger perfectly and you can get perfect clicks without adding any material.

Note: the two clips here are actually tiny springs that pop the wheel up after clicking. The thing the wheel clips/hooks onto is UNDER the PCB. So to remove the wheel it is best to left the back part of the wheel and pull towards the rear of the mouse to unhook bottom part. Lifting straight up can permanently damage the hook leaving the wheel free to roam in different directions

Thanks for the tutorial Flexxxv! I didn't have a hot glue gun so I needed to find an alternative like xavpaquet. I found that tape was too soft and didnt allow clicking. I found that the plastic wrappers that come with nyquil/dayquil was nice a rigid. I cut a VERY small piece and super glued it to the part you super glued. Works like a charm! Thanks again.

@mrsplooge: Why are you being so grumpy and picky? Yeah...it's not as concise as the 8x8x8 led matrix instructable, but he still did a good job! Judging by your name, my guess is that you troll instructables.com, spreading you cess pool "splooge" for no other reason than to make you feel better about your own pathetic life!

@amh171: The easiest way to clean the inside of anything electronic is low percentage rubbing alcohol and a NEW toothbrush from the $1 store. Just make sure you remove the battery (dead or not) and after you're done place it in front of a fan for a few hours to completely dry (rotating it periodically).

If anyone is not as lucky as Applez00800 with the pads, Google "Corepad Skatez Pro - Logitech Performance MX-M950". If it doesn't say "...MX-M 950, the skatez will not fit! I learned the hard way! lol

Lastly, I didn't have this problem, but there was a lot of play in the travel distance left and right buttons. Behind the scroll wheel there is a rectangle button that has a circle, a line, then the symbol for "refresh". Inside the mouse, that button sits on a bridge. I hot glued the left and right mouse button to that bridge, this reduced the travel distance of the left/right mouse button in half! Doesn't seem like a big deal, until you work in CAD or some other program where you click the mouse a few hundred times a day!

Great instructable, I have been having issues with the middle button for months, and try to play Duex Ex without a middle button is annoying to say the least (yes I now you can define a new control, but that is not the point).

I did not have a hot glue gun, I tried epoxy but it was too soft so I tried a hard rubber 'O' ring over the little point, with no success. So then I got a lookin' in my bits draw and found an old broken light sabre (Darth's), and the tip looked about perfect so I cut a tiny dome (1.5-2mm) and used superior glue to affix it.

Works a treat, thanks for a great write up.

P.S. To those with a Logitech in warranty (usually about 3 years) get in touch with Logitech and they will send you a brand new mouse, I have had three replacements, and was fed up with having half broken mice (not Logitech's fault I am very hard on mice, I killed a Microsoft mouse in less than a day) so your work around is a bonus.

Also, I arrived here because I dropped my mouse down a flight of stairs and the mouse wheel button + smooth/stepped button felt as though they had been jammed and were not working afterwards. I could still scroll, but I couldn't change it to stepped mode, and the middle button no longer clicked.

Simply opening it up, checking that nothing was broken and that the mechanics still worked (they did), and putting it back together again was enough to fix it good as new :)

One thing to mention about taking off the slide pads: they are attached with a double sided adhesive thin foam tape (aka spongey "tape" with adhesive on both sides") It is incredibly easy to destroy this tape and separate it into two layers (one layer stuck to the pad, the other layer stuck to the underside of the mouse). To avoid this, use a small flat head screwdriver with a thin tip and apply downward pressure into the bottom of the mouse, then slide it underneath the tape so that you're lifting the adhesive from the underside of the mouse, and not splitting the foam layer in two.

Does anyone know how to fix my mouse(performance mx) problem:

I left the mouse without battery for 3 months. When I put in the battery and switch it on, the first led (from bottom) blinking fast for 1 second and off for 1 second. It doesn't work anymore

Have you tried charging the mouse? After charging the mouse you can try to pair the unifying usb dongle with the mouse again. (use the logitech software for this) Good Luck!

yes I did that. Leave my mouse charging for 1 day but the red led still flashing and no response from software to pair with unifying usb dongle
