We waited for so long for more "Gilmore Girls," right????

It was worth it. Especially as in the first shot was such a fantastic hat, I just had to make a pattern for it.

This hat is pretty easy to make, and has a super-cool effect on the top where the stripes meet.

You will need:

Size 4.5mm circular knitting needles
Optional: 4.5mm double pointed needles to change to as the top of the hat narrows
100gm ball of grey yarn
Darning needle
Pom-pom maker OR fur pom-pom
Basic knitting skills

Step 1: Step 1: Starting at the Brim

This hat has an awesome fold up brim. It has a 1x1 rib around the bottom.

Cast on 100 stitches in grey yarn, and join in the round. I like to join in the round by adding an extra cast-on stitch (making it 101 stitches) then passing this stitch over the first stitch on the other end to make it a loop. Others like to do the same thing by also adding 1 more stitch slipping the first stitch onto the needle next to the last stitch, and knitting these 2 stitches together at the beginning.... personally I think this is a little bulky to begin, but if you like it, go for it. But, basically any method you prefer for joining in the round is good.

Knit 1, purl 1. Repeat this 2 stitch pattern over the next 18 rows. Such is the joy of knitting in the round.

Row 19: Knit the whole row

Row 20: Knit the whole row
These 2 knitted rows create almost a score line across the knitting, making it easier to fold the brim upwards at the end.

You now have the brim completed.

Step 2: Step 2: From the Brim to the Top

The top is a different pattern of ribbing really.

Row 21: Knit 3, purl 3. Repeat this pattern over the next 40 rows.

You now have a brim, and the most of the hat. Now for that super cool top where the different stripes of the ribbing end at different points.

Row 61: Knit 3, purl 3 together - continue over whole row. (This basically narrows the valleys in the ribbing pattern)

Row 62-64: Knit 3, purl 1 over these 3 rows

Row 65: Slip 1, knit 2 together, pass slip stitch over, purl 1, knit 3, purl 1, repeat over whole row (this ends every second raised ridge section in the ribbing with a cool point)

Row 66-68: Purl 2, (knit 3, purl 3) continue to repeat the bracketed section until the last stitch, purl 1

Row 69: Purl 2 together, pass the last stitch from the previous round over, knit 3, (purl 3 together, knit 3) repeat the bracketed section until the end of the rotation,

Row 70-72: purl 1, knit 3 - repeat over the whole 3 rotations

Row 73: Purl 1, slip 1, knit 2 together, pass slip stitch over. Repeat this pattern over the whole row.

Row 74: Purl 1, knit 1, repeat over the whole row

Cut off the yarn, thread onto a darning needle, thread through all the remaining stitches, and pull to tighten.

You now have survived the hardest bit. YAY!

Step 3: Step 3: Finishing Your Hat

This takes very little to bring together really.

Making your pom-pom - I used an extra large pom-pom maker and created the grey pom-pom. The original hat has a fur pom-pom which can be bought and sewn on the top.... only.... not by me (I am a vegetarian, and I won't deal with fur for any reason)... so I opted for a yarn pom-pom. Stitch the finished or fur pom-pom directly onto the top of the hat. Do this securely with a darning needle as you don't want to loose that pom-pom (or in my case, I don't want the puppy pulling it off my hat)

Darn in your tails and trim them neatly. You are now ready to both rock and roll.... or at least, relax and re-watch the first snow in the new "Gilmore Girls".
