I created this simple macrame candle hanger as a house warming gift for my sister. It now hangs proudly in her kitchen.

This is a lovely, easy to create gift that can be enjoyed by anyone!

The finished product hangs 21 inches tall

To create this hanger you will need:

3mm macrame cord
a candle holder/pot - mine is 3inches tall and 3inches in diameter
scissors
a tape measure/ruler
a screwdriver
painters tape
somewhere to hang your project as you work on it
a candle
knowledge of the various knots (though I will explain at each step how to create each knot)

Step 1: Measure and Cut Your Cords

You will need to cut the following lengths of cord. Remember that my glass pot is 3 inches tall and 3 inches in diameter, you will need to adjust your lengths if your pot is different.

8 lengths at 75 inches
1 length at 60 inches
1 length at 40 inches
1 length at 20 inches

For the first 8 lengths, you can measure the first one and then use that as a template to measure the rest to keep things simple

Step 2: Create the Top Loop

Fold your 8 lengths of 75 inches in half and use painters tape to hold the cords together just below the loop you have created.

Using the 60 inch cord, tie a bay knot (see image) - fold the cord in half and insert folded end into the loop, pass the ends of the cord through the small loop.

Use the right hand end to work around the loop with a vertical bay knot - take the right thread over the loop, under the loop, and through the thread. Pull tight, but not too tight. Repeat this until you have used almost all the cord.

Repeat for the left hand side until you have used all the cord (leave two small tails).

Step 3: Complete the Loop

Take off the painters tape, and use the 40 inch length to create a gathering knot to complete and secure the loop - loop the end of the cord and place it on top of your gathered cords with the end pointing up. Wrap the long end around the lunch of lengths, make sure to keep it nice and tight. Once you reach the end of your cord pass the end through the loop that it sticking out the end of the wrap. Pull the top end so the loop is pulled inside the gathered wrap. Trim the ends and use a screwdriver to push the ends inside the wrap.

Step 4: Start the Macrame

**Hang your loop somewhere in your house to make things easy**

Separate the 16 hanging lengths into 4 groups of 4 - two middle anchor cords and a left and right tying cord. With the first group tie 10 half knots - pass the left tying cord under the two middle anchor cords. Then pass the right tying cord under the end of the left tying cord, over top of the two middle anchor cords, and in through the loop of the left tying cord.

Repeat the half knot 10 times and the spiral will be naturally created (approx 2.5 inches of half knots).

Repeat with all four sets of cords, then leave a gap of approximately 2.5 inches and tie each set of four cords with a regular knot.

Step 5: Continue the Macrame

Below each regular knot, tie 5 square knots. A squad knot, is essentially two half knots, one done as before, and the second done in reverse...

First, pass the left tying cord under the two middle anchor cords. Then pass the right tying cord under the end of the left tying cord, over top of the two middle anchor cords, and in through the loop of the left tying cord.

Second, pass the right tying cord under the two middle anchor cords. Then pass the left tying cord under the end of the right tying cord, over top of the two middle anchor cords, and in through the loop of the right tying cord.

Repeat until you have tied 5 square knots in each of the 4 sets of cords (approx 3 inches of knots).

**in this step, use the longest lengths as your tying cords and leave the shorter two lengths in the middle as your anchor cords**

Step 6: Continue the Macrame

Now take 2 cords from one set of 4 and 2 cords from the adjoining set of 4 and bring them together. Leave a space of 2 inches and tis two square knots.

Repeat for all 4 sets.

Step 7: Secure the Ends

Gather all cord lengths together, use painters tape to hold them secure. Leave a space of 1.5 inches and use the 20 inch length of cord to tie a gathering knot like before.
