Mahogany Humidor

This is an humidor with space for 50 cigars. The box is made of mahogany on the outside and the inside is made from Spanish cedar. The Spanish cedar is perfect for releasing and adsorbing humidity as needed naturally. This will support the humidifier to create a naturally stable environment for long filler cigars. Inside the box there is also an hygrometer which will help you to control the humidity.

The humidor is made in collaboration with the local public wood workshop.

Step 1: Step 1: Planing and Cutting

The start of this project is collecting the wooden pieces I will use. The box will be 24 cm wide x 24 cm long x 13 cm high. The side piece with a thickness of 14 mm and the top and bottom pieces 6 mm thick.

First the 6 pieces mahogany went through the surface planer. This to make sure all the pieces are flat. Then those pieces went through the thickness planer to ensure the thickness of the pieces are 6mm and 14mm.

Then the pieces went to the sawing table and cut 4 parts of 13 x 24 x 1,4 cm and 2 parts of 24 x 24 x 0,6 cm

Step 2: Step 2: Milling

With help of an earlier fabricated mold for the table mill we created finger joints on the side pieces. We’ve also buried in the bottom and top pieces inside the thicker side pieces. To create this we used the router with a 6mm deep mill.

Step 3: Step 3: Glueing the Sides

The 3th step is glueing the 4 side pieces with wood glue. And with help of a hammer and some clamps the 4 pieces were brought together. With an important focus that all angels are 90 degrees.

Step 4: Step 4: Glueing the Top and Bottom

When the glue was cured and the sides formed a nice square shape we attached the top and bottom. When all the glue was cured the box is sanded and we removed al glue leftovers.

Step 5: Step 5: Cutting Through

The lid of the humidor will be 3 cm heigh so we have to cut the box through at 3cm from the top. This is how we created the lid and bottom.

Step 6: Step 6: Hinge

We then milled the space needed for the hinge with a

router, followed by drilling some holes to create space for the limiter.

Step 7: Step 7: Inside of the Humidor

The inside of the humidor is made of spannish cedar. The sawing table has an option to tilt the sawing blade in an 45 degrees angle. Thanks to this we've made 4 miter sawn boards for the inside. After we've cut the 4 boards we've rounded them with the milling table.

Step 8: Step 8: Oil

Before we've glued the inside on the shell. We've oiled the mahogany to avoid oil spil on the spannish cedar. This must remain unprocessed to not affect the cigars when the humidor is in use.

Step 9: Step 9: Glueing the Core

After the mahogany was treated with oil we've glued in the earlier made boards.

When the glue was cured we measured the inside to create a platform with the leftovers. Those slats from 2 cm wide we're glued in eaqaly with the help of some spacers.

Step 10: Step 10: Hydrometer Display

With the last piece of spannish cedar we created the display on the inside of the lid. This display gives place to the hydrometer and the humidifier. We've drilled the holes with 2 diffrent sices of hole drills which were slightly smaller than the final size. We've sanded the last part, to create the perfect fit.

When al parts we're finished we also glued those to the lid and the humidifier and hydrometer we're glued in with help of a double-sided adhesive strip.

Step 11: Step 11: Finishing Touches

At last we've attached the lid to the box with the beatifull hinges with a limiter. The holes and crevices were filled up with filler wax in the same colour as the oiled mahogany.
