Introduction: Make LuxPro Multi-Color Headlamp Astrophotography Safe
This is a guide to make the LuxPro Multi-Color head lamp more safe for astrophotography.
I recently bought this headlamp because I needed one for astrophotography to not ruin my photos or my night vision. I was immediately disappointed when I realized I had to cycle through bright white light in order to go to red and green light. I decided to crack it open and try to rewire it. Unfortunately, there was a PCB, which I have no idea how to work with so I stuck with changing the wiring. This guide will show you how to do that.
Supplies
You will need a soldering iron. Probably no solder. A hot glue gun is recommended but optional.
Step 1: Disassembling
This one is pretty simple. Just take the band off to access where the batteries are. Remove the batteries.
Step 2: More Disassembling
Take the casing off by removing the three screws underneath the batteries.
Step 3: Disconnecting the LED
Now that you can see the PCB and the LED panel, there are four cables. This head lamp works by outputting power through one cable and lighting up the LEDs it is connected to. They all share a ground. You will de-solder the cable. Take not, do not de-solder it from the LED board. This will make is so you can not still use the white LEDs. De-solder it from the other PCB board that has the battery harness connected to it.
Step 4: Re-soldering the LED
Now with your soldering iron, solder the LED wire to the solder pad for the middle LED. This is the pad on the opposite side of the headlamp from the white LED. For me, there was a big chunk of solder on the pad so I didn’t need any solder.
Step 5: Reassemble
Now, just reassemble it. I put some dots of hot glue on the mirror of the center LED to hold it in place and make it easier to assemble. This is optional but recommend. From here, just assemble as you disassembled. Because there is a PCB, when you push the button to turn the red and green LEDs on, there will be two pushes before anything happens. When you push the other button, all the white LEDs will turn on.
Hope I haven’t been too confusing. Thanks
