Make Your Own Coilgun

Introduction: Make Your Own Coilgun

About: Awesome Electronics Tutorials, Projects and How To´s

In this video I will show you how to turn on and off coils precisely in order to create a coilgun. In my case it is a pretty harmless "gun" that can accelerate ferromagnetic projectiles to safe speed levels through two coil stages. Let's get started!

Step 1: Watch the Video!

The video gives you a good overview of what is necessary to create your own coilgun. During the next steps I will present you some additional information.

Step 2: Order Your Parts!

Here you can find a parts list with example sellers for your convenience (affiliate links).

Step 3: Print Your "Gun"!

Here you can find and download the blueprints of my coilgun, the 3D model and the .stl file for your 3D Printer.

Step 4: Create the Circuit!

Here you can find the schematic of the circuit and reference pictures of my perfboard design.

Step 5: Upload the Code!

Here you can download the Arduino sketch/code that I created for this project. It works pretty well but feel free to fine tune the code to your likings.

Step 6: Success!

Awesome! You did it! You just created your own Coilgun!

    Question 4 years ago

Hi Scott, I recently got a task from my professor to build a coil gun. Naturally I look up your videos for inspiration/reference. In your build, you use 6v12A power supply. However since my coil gun has to be portable, do you have any suggestion on what battery should I be using?

Question 4 years ago on Step 4

Why are some parts linked back to VCC, and some to V5? I dont really get the difference between the two.
