## Introduction: Make a Cube From a Net - 3D Coloring Book: Cubes and Things

- This is guide is made to help people who picked up one of my patterned nets at the Maker Faire or a Polyhedra Party and would like directions on how to transform their 2D net into a 3D form.

- I've included a pdf of a net that will be in my third 3D coloring book: Cubes and Things - Net Book #3 - Color Symmetries. Although I am selling my patterned nets, it is possible to get plain ones for free. You creative Instructable folks might enjoy adding in your own patterns.

The Terminology

- A polyhedron is a 3D shape (a cube is the most common example) made up of 2D polygons (squares, triangles, etc.) The plural form of the word is polyhedra.

- The net of a polyhedron is a 2D plan that folds up to create that shape. One polyhedron can have many different nets, ie. arrangements of polygons.

## Step 1: Color (Or Not) and Cut

- The first step is to color the net in your own unique way (unless you prefer the simplicity of the black lines on white paper).

-Then cut it out along all the outside edges. Keep it as one whole piece; do not cut any of the inside edges.

## Step 2: Fold It to Form It

- Now fold all the interior edges and to see how the form comes together: the polygons fall into place to describe the cube it will soon be.

## Step 3: Taping Details

- The best tape to use is 1/2 inch magic tape. Removable magic tape gives you another chance to line up the pieces and 1/2 inch width is perfect for these forms.

- It is easier to put the tape on the outside. Though it is trickier to put the tape on the inside, the completed cube will look slicker. I did this one with the tape on the inside to impress you.

- For a really good join, firmly attach the tape to one side and then attach the other. Your form will be better constructed if the length of the tape is placed parallel with the polygons’ edges.

-The tape is a structural element. Taping every edge carefully will evenly distribute forces around your new form and emphasize its beautiful geometric regularity.

## Step 4: Secrets of Taping the Last Piece

- If possible, leave the last piece connected only on one side. (Looks like a box with the lid open.) Put tape on all the remaining edges.

- Note: I built mine with the tape on the inside. If you are making yours with the tape on the outside, then put the tape on the edges of that last piece that hasn't yet been taped down.

- Carefully press the last piece into place. Since you can no longer apply pressure from the inside, you need a secret weapon to secure the tape on the inside: a long quilting pin is perfect. Poke it through the vertex and under the edge you are taping. Press down on the outside of the form with your finger, while pushing up from the inside with the pin.

## Step 5: Two Cubes From One Tile

- This final step shows how one square tile can be arranged differently on the two net plans to create two different patterns on the constructed cubes.
