Introduction: Make a Free WiFi Hotspot on Windows
Would you like to have a wireless hotspot for free and with no ads? Read this instructable to find out how.
Step 1: Connect to a Network.
You must connect to a network before beginning the process.
Step 2: Type Virtualrouter.codeplex.com Into the Address Bar.
This is the website where you will download the program.
Step 3: On the Right-hand Side of the Page, Click on the Download Button.
This will download the program.
Step 4: Save the Download File and Then Begin the Installation.
Save the file. Click on run when it pops up and then click the Next button to start the installation.
Step 5: Complete the Installation.
This should take 20-30 seconds maximum.
Step 6: Set Up Your Wireless Hotspot and Click "Start Virtual Router".
Decide on a network name (SSID), password, and select "shared connection" to the current wireless connection that you are on. You can do that by clicking on the Internet icon at the bottom of your page or somewhere on your page. Under the network name you are connected to, it will say the connection type (ex: Wireless Network Connection above the network you are connected to in the list of networks).

You can accomplish the same without having to download any extra software. Do a quick google search on ICS (internet connection sharing). With a handful of "netuse" commands from the command prompt, you can "share" a wired connection with a wireless adapter. Useful if your home wireless goes down and cant shell out the cash for a new AP.

I'm aware of that. This is simply just another way to do it.

A bit confused... So once created after software etc. would I still need internet on PC to be able to broadcast, or can I now eliminate internet and save a few bucks?

It shows that I am using 2 networks because I'm connected to both. If my network connection stops, my virtual router will be active.

So if my PC has the software and is running, even though it's at home, and I'm many miles away with my iPhone, it should work?

The iPhone would be out of range of the hotspot, so no.

What if it ends up giving a virus

Other programs can give viruses and malware. My antivirus, malware protector, and firewall didn't detect anything.

Thanks, Jlathem56. Could you define "point your iPhone to it" please?
I travel frequently and most of the time I have only my iPhone with me. Will this hotspot provide me with internet access via wi-fi wherever I am?

As long as your computer is running while you are using your iPhone. Also, don't forget to see if the virtual router has started. Also, this will work wherever you are. Just check the list of WiFi networks and yours should come up.

i thknk this would be great for guest who visit, don't have to give out secure password nor complex setup. Ideal as my router does not have guest acess so can seperate it. :)

I have a question. If I use my laptop to connect to the internet, install the download, and create the hotspot how (or can I) do I go about using the hotspot with my iPhone?
Thanks
