Intro: Make a Muffaletta Sandwich

While this isn't a completely authentic muffaletta sandwich it still tastes really good. The idea is basically an Italian flavored sandwich, with olive salad spread. It originated at the Central Grocery in New Orleans.  This sandwich comes close on the olive spread, though it takes shortcuts on the bread and meat.

STEP 1: Make the Olive Spread

To make the olive spread put
3/4 cup pimento stuffed olives
1/4 cup pitted Kalamata olives
1/4 cup giardiniera (pickled vegetables)
2 large pepperocini
3-4 pickled onions
2 Tbs capers
1 medium garlic clove
1 tsp Italian seasoning
black pepper
2 tsp lemon juice
2 Tbs olive oil

into the bowl of a food processor. Coarsely chop and put in the refrigerator overnight.

STEP 2: Build the Sandwich

Kaiser Rolls
Deli meat variety pack containing ham, salami, and bologna (this one had enough for 4 sandwiches)
provolone cheese slices
Mayo type spread
Olive Spread

Slice the rolls and put the olive spread on the bottom. Put  1 to 2 tablespoons, depending on taste. The leftovers can be used as a dip or tapenade on bread or crackers (or even pizza). Build the sandwich up with the meat and cheese in whatever order you like. Finally spread a good amount of the mayo type spread on the top half of the roll. The sweetness of the mayo type spread helps balance out the salty/sour flavors from the olive spread.

Put the top of the roll on top of the sandwich.

Makes a great picnic and party sandwich.

Olive salad makes almost any sandwich better! And yours is as good as any other I've seen. The fresh lemon juice is a definite plus! Good'un!!

For the sandwich I have a preference for a layer of thinly-sliced hot pastrami, followed by a layer of thinly-sliced hot pastrami. Repeat as desired. ;-) Top with provolone and lots of the olive salad.
Your sandwich sounds tasty too. Next time I make the olive salad/spread I need to make extra and try it with the pastrami.
while this looks tasty , I was hoping for more of a recipe for the olive salad/relish
Sorry this was my first Instructable. Somehow between editing and publishing the list of ingredients disappeared.

Now I've added it back. Since the sandwich is so easy, all the work is in the olive spread. Not much point without the list.
