Make Your Own Speaker Stands

I got a sweet deal on some speakers and an amp for the downstairs treadmill/bike room. But I couldn't blow that deal by spending $50 on some speaker stands.

Step 1: Parts

You will need:
-16x 1-1/4" screws
-1 x 1" x 8" x 2' wood
-1 x 1" x 6" x 2' wood
-Spray paint

Step 2: Tools

Saw
Drill
Tape Measure
Square

-Optional: Dremel Lathe

Step 3: Make the Legs

The legs are 13" long, you will need 2 for each stand.

Step 4: Now I Am No Good at Cutting

Apparently somewhere between measuring and cutting I usually make mistakes. So I used the dremel lathe attachment to clean up my cuts.

Step 5: Cut the Base and the Tops

The base should be cut from one piece of 1x8. It should be 11" long. You need two.

The top piece should be cut from 1 x 6, it should be 6.5" long. You need two.

Step 6: Drill Holes

You need to drill 4 holes in the top and 4 in the bottom. I used a square to mark 45s from the corners to put the legs on.

I then used the first one as a template for the rest of the pieces.

Step 7: Put It Together.

I drilled pilot holes in the legs so the wood did not split and then screwed it all together.

Step 8: Paint It.

I sanded it with some 220 paper and then hit gave it the krylon touch.

Are the material dimensions given actual size or dimensional?

Good job. Also, you could cut the 2 vertical board edges at a 45 and joint them (like a frame) to created a closed V and that would conceal the wires. Then drill a hole for the wires in the back of the top plate.

I gotta say, those looks pretty nice, I bet making a pair of those would look sweet in a nice cherry hardwood.

I've been looking to make some speaker stands- do the speakers actually attach to your stand or just rest on top?
