Introduction: Make Your Own Vintage Suitcase Coffee Table
I love, LOVE vintage suitcases. What is better than a vintage suitcase......
A Vintage Suitcase Coffee Table.
This project is fairly cheap and takes less than 15 minutes to do!
Lets get to it...
Step 1: What You Will Need
What You Will Need:
Power Drill
Vintage Suitcase (Preferably one made of wood. Plastic works too!)
Measuring tape
Waddell Straight (or Angle) Top Plate Hardware (4)
4 inch Tapered Table Legs (4)
Optional: Spray Paint or Paint for the Legs
*You can use table legs that are bigger. I used 4" table legs for this project*
*Go to a hardware store, like Ace Hardware, to buy the Hardware. I went to Lowes and Home Depot and neither of them had the correct Top Plate Hardware. They did had a large table leg selection though.*
Step 2: Lets Begin
1.Begin by turning the suitcase upside down and placing a piece of hardware on each corner
2. Make sure each Top Plate is bubble side up.
*If you are using Angle Plates make sure the leg hole is pointing in the right direction before drilling the screws in*
3. Measure the hardware and mark its spot, so each piece is in the same spot.
I placed my Top Plate 4 inches from the bottom of the suitcase.
4. Screw each plate in.
5. Screw in the legs
Step 3: YOURE FINISHED!!
Now you have your very own vintage suitcase coffee table!!

I used tapered & angled furniture legs for a mid-century modern look. Found them on http://www.tablelegsonline.com/
My girlfriend likes it because it reminds her of like the 60's - 70's era, and goes well with her other old furniture.

Just got my legs on mine and will decorate the inside for a 12 year old girl. Painting it is next and then materials and lace inside. It will make a great Christmas gift that can be kept for life.

I think I might recommend some reinforcement in the base, most of the cases I know of are made of a kind of heavy card or fibreboard.
In all other respects though it's an EXCELLENT idea, and a really nice project. reuse an old suitcase and gain a table with storage and style.
Thanks for sharing it.

A guy from Houzz.com made one of these into a dog bed much like you have done. LOVE IT! Don't have a dog, but do have need for tables! Great job and easy to follow instructions.

I made a side table out of two vintage suitcases (family 'heirlooms'): a 26", and a matching 21". I made a free-standing plywood base by cutting plywood the correct size and screwing the legs into the plywood. The suitcases sit on top of the plywood base, so the condition of the suitcases isn't compromised by screwing hardware into them. I chose large wooden bun feet and 3/4" plywood to raise the top to the appropriate height for the couch. Lots and lots of storage space inside!

Smart, I always though trunks made good coffee tables but this is even cheaper. You can change up the style with different legs, Even if the sides (top/bottom on the table) are messed up you can always put some decent plywood on them and varnish them and there you go.
Very good idea.

That is really cute! So simple and so much extra storage too!
