Introduction: Make Your Own Emoji Pillow

Step 1: Materials

You will need:


1. 1 package of yellow felt material (36 in x 36 in)

2. 1 brown felt (regular 12 in x 9 in sheet) – If you’re making the Sunglasses Emoji, you’ll need black felt also

3. Fabric glue

4. 1 bag of pillow stuffing

5. Scissors

6. Ballpoint pen

7. Tape (Painter’s tape worked best for me)

8. Emoji pattern

9. Circle pattern

10. Clothespins

*Most materials can be found at Michael’s, Walmart or Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts.

Step 2: Making the Head

Print and assemble the circle pattern. Lay it on the yellow felt. If you’re having trouble keeping the paper still while tracing, tape the back of the pattern to the fabric. Now trace around the pattern. Make another circle for the other side of the pillow.

Step 3: Cutting the Feature Pattern

Take your emoji pattern and carefully cut out each of features. Don’t massacre the pattern because it’ll be helpful in a following step.

Step 4: Creating the Features

Place each of the features on your brown or black felt and cut. Tip: To keep your pattern from moving while you’re cutting, tape the back of the pattern to the felt.

Step 5: Placing the Features

Place the sheet of paper on the yellow circle. The pattern is centered on the page, so use your keen, crafting eye to place the pattern where it best matches the emoji.

Step 6: Attaching the Features

Now that you know where you’re going to glue the features, with the paper still on the yellow circle, put a small amount of glue on the middle back of one of the pieces. Do this with each of the features of your pattern. Once all are glued, go ahead and glue the edges of each feature to the yellow material.

Step 7: Sewing the Features

This step is optional. I found that when I was doing this project for the first time, it looked better overall for the features to be sewn to the yellow material. If you don’t have a sewing machine, you can do a simple blanket stitch by hand.

Step 8: Making the Pillow

Lay the yellow circle with the features face up on your surface so the emoji’s face is facing you. Grab your other yellow felt circle and find the inside of the fabric. REMEMBER: the inside is where the weaving looks thinner; the outer side looks fuzzier. Lay the second yellow circle on top of the other with the inside yellow material facing towards you and the fuzzier size touching the emoji’s face.

Leave 1 to 2 inches unglued. This is where you’ll add the pillow stuffing. Leave the glue to dry for at least 10 minutes.

Step 9: Stuff

Once the glue is dry, add the pillow stuffing.

Step 10: Closing the Gap

Once you’ve filled your pillow with enough stuffing, glue the gap closed. Use clothespins to hold it until it dries. You can also just hold it until it dries, but if you find yourself glued to you emoji, remember I did tell you to use clothespins!

Your emoji will look a little off at first but once you’ve moved the stuffing around, it’ll start to take its shape.
