Introduction: Making Barn Door for My House

About: I like to deal with 3D modeling. I have a small workshop and I make something with wood.I am also an amateur photographer.

I've been thinking about making a door for my house for a while. Only the sill and frame were attached. There was not enough space to make a regular door. So I decided to make a sliding door.

I made a design using metal ornaments that I had bought before. Since it is a special design, the dimensions are also specific to the house.

The dimensions of the door are 95cmx210cm

I originally designed a double-sided door, but I only used the front as there was not enough space at the back.

It was one of the projects that I enjoyed doing and that was useful for my home.

Supplies

After designing and planning the barn door, I started to supply the necessary materials.

-Pine timbers (4cmx30cmx300cm - 4 pieces)

-Forged irons in various ornaments

-Sliding door mechanism (retail hardware)

-Trim router

-Hand router

-Orbit sander

-Hand planer

-Thickness planer

-Circular saw (mounted on the table)

-Drill press

-Wood glue

-Spray paint (black)

-Wood screws etc.

Step 1: Cutting, Planing

I ripped all of my timber pines 30cm wide to fit into the thickness planer. First I flattening some twisted corners with handplane then I planing them all to the same thickness, which is 3.5cm.

Step 2: Making Joints and Gluing

I make some dominoes from scrap woods for edge joining on my homemade router table. I'm making pockets with trim router and using 1/2" straight bit.

I marked the timbers to be in the correct order. I glued it all together with wood glue and fixed it with homemade bar clamps which I made inspired by Pask Makes-Easier Homemade Bar Clamps.

A few days later, I strengthened the dominoes by adding dowels.

Step 3: First Coat of Wood Finish

After sanding a little, we apply the first coat of varnish for protection. I don't want the door to bend as the workshop can be hot.

Step 4: Preparing for Carving

According to my design, I began to mark the places to mount the forged metal parts and all done.

Step 5: Carving, Carving More Carving...

I made the engraving template for all forged irons. And I started carving according to templates.

After all the carving was done, I sanded it again.

Then preparing door ladges, cutting, marking, carving etc.

Step 6: Carving the Door Ladge Place, at the Top and Bottom

I made one final action to complete the door.

I used the door ladges as inlays. I'm carving the places and gluing them.

And ready to mount sliding hardwares.

Step 7: Adding Back Support Rails

Carving 3 grooves for metal rods and drilling mounting holes inside. Mounting the metal bars with metal inserts. Grinding hexagon bolt heads make looks beatiful.

Painting with black spray paint. And its done.

Step 8: Mounting Sliding Hardwares

I marked the locations of the holes and drilled them. Cutting and inserting the stainless steel pipes into the holes to make it more solid.

Finally, I wood finishing the entire door.

Step 9: Mounting the Sliding Door Rails to the Wall.

I prepared a wooden beam for support under the metal rails. I marked the hole locations on the wall and attached the rail with bolts.

I checked the door by hanging it on the rails.

Step 10: Final Step

I attached a brushes to the back of the door for thermal insulation.

I have completed the door by gluing all the forged metals with CA glue.

Hope you enjoy it!
