Introduction: Making Grove Cable Extenders

Grove cables come in standard lengths and since they have a male plug on both sides, they cannot be connected together. This tutorial shows you how to make a female to female plug that you can use to extend several grove cables into a longer one.

What you'll need for this project:

  • Standard Grove sockets
  • A small knife
  • Pliers
  • A hot glue gun
  • A hand held drill with a 1mm drill bit

Step 1: Cut the Points of the Sockets

You'll start with standard Grove sockets. These have some little points on the ends that will need to be removed for the two sockets to be glued together tightly. Take a small knife, lay the sockets on their sides, and cut off both the small points.

Step 2: Straighten the Pins

We will use the pins from one of the sockets. You will need to straighten the pins of both of them. This can be done with the help of some pliers.

Step 3: Remove the Pins From One of the Sockets

We will only be using the pins from one of the sockets and we will stick those through the body of the other socket. We will therefore remove the pins from one of the sockets. Put the socket in a vise and you'll be able to pull out the pins one by one.

Step 4: Drill Out the Holes

In order to be able to fit the sockets together we will have to drill out the holes in the socket that we just removed the pins from. I did this with a 1 mm drill bit in a small hand-powered drill. After this you'll have the two parts in the picture: one socket with the pins in tact and another with the pins removed and the holes drilled to 1 mm.

Step 5: Glue the Parts Together

Add some hot glue to the side that still has the pins and slide the other side onto it. Be careful not to get glue on the top part of the pins, as that will insulate them from the plugs. Make sure to put the hooks on the sockets (the ones that hold the Grove plugs in place) on opposite sides. This will ensure the cables in both grove cables will line up properly.

Step 6: Connect Your Cables

That's it! Your cable extenders are done and you can now extend your cables.
