Making a Shelf
Intro: Making a Shelf
STEP 1: Preparing the Pieces
The first thing we need to do is to prepare our wood.
So we need 3 pieces 2.0 x 2.0 x 50.0 cm and a piece 2.0 x 15.0 x 50.0 cm. Of course you can make your shelf as long as you want it to be. Mine is 50.0 cm.
STEP 2: Cut to Length
Next we need to cut all individual pieces 15 cm long. I did that on my radial arm saw but you can use your table saw or just a hand saw.
STEP 3: Slip Joint Part A
In order to connect the pieces together we need to create joints. A slip joint is ideal for our needs. Start by creating 2.0 cm long tenon on each piece. The included plan will help you with the exact dimensions.
STEP 4: Slip Joint Part B
Same here, we need to make a mortise on each piece. Make sure that the tenon and mortise fit snugly together but not too tight.
STEP 5: Preparing for Glue
Time for sanding. A light sand will make the wood smoother so its easier to sand after the pieces are glued together.
STEP 6: Assembling
Assemble the pieces as shown n the pictures above. Wood glue also needed.
STEP 7: Prepare for Finishing
Final sanding before apply finish.
STEP 8: Two Notches
Two 2.0 x 2.0 notches, one 11.0 cm from each end must be cut so the brackets can fit in.
STEP 9: Finishing
Apply finish and hang it on the wall!
Its all done!
