Making a Glass Mold by CNC

It was exciting to use a CNC machine to create a blow mold.  Using the machine’s speed and precision allowed the making of a mold to be produced quicker and more precisely than could be done by hand. To make a glass mold I chose cherry wood, which can bear being soaked in water and then high temperatures. However, blowing glass into the mold was challenging because of the narrow shape of the neck of the wine bottle which was used as the blow hole. Here is my journey!


Supplies
Cherry wood. Hinges, Wood stick, Screws
 

Step 1:

First, CNC the mold out of cherry wood.

The mold is finished with hinges and handles. Drilling holes into the mold to allow the air to release through when glass is blown into the mold.

Step 4:

After soaking the mold into the water for a week, I brought it to glass shop. (The mold is soaked in water to prevent burning when it is touched by hot glass.)

Step 5:

My favorite part is the effect of the hot glass blown into the mold, leaving beautiful scorch marks on the interior of the mold.
