Mason Jar Terrarium

Hello! Welcome to my fourth instructable!
Today, I am going to teach you how to make a terrarium in a mason jar.
The reason why I decided to make this is because I love gardening.
Sometimes though, I don't feel like watering the plants, or pulling the weeds, so, I thought, why not make a mini garden!
It is so easy, quick, and inexpensive to make, and they don't require much work to maintain.
All you have to do once they are done, is place it in a sunny spot, and water them every few days ( just a sprinkle! ).
Several mason jar terrariums grouped together would liven up a dull window sill, and look very trendy.
I am only twelve, so if you have any suggestions on how to make my instructables better, or want me to do certain instructable, just let me know!

Anyway, on with the instructable!

Step 1: Choose Your Plant

Mosses and succulents work especially well.

Since mason jars are small, choose plants that do not grow large root systems and can thrive in small spaces, like succulents.

I chose the succulent "Golden Glow".

It is a small type of succulent that fits well in the jar.

I got mine from Lowes.

Step 2: Gather Your Materials

I will sort the materials into two groups: Needed and Optional.

Needed:

Mason Jar

Pebbles or small rocks

Potting Soil

Small Plant/Succulent

Optional:

Small Figurines

Step 3: Put in the Pebbles

The reason why you put in the pebbles, is to allow for drainage.

It helps keep the roots from sitting in water and rotting.

Do a layer of them, about half an inch to three fourths of an inch thick.

Step 4: Put in the Potting Soil

Drop in some potting soil.

Fill the jar about half way to three fourths of the way up.

Dig a deep hole where the plant will sit in.

Step 5: Put in the Plant

Carefully remove the plant from the plastic pot that it came in.

After that, place it in the hole that you dug, and cover it up.

Now is the time to put in your small figurines, if you choose to.

Mini ceramic mushrooms look super cute in these mason jar terrariums!

* Mason jar lids often come in 2 separate parts, the lid and the rim. Only screw on the rim for decoration. Do not seal up your jar completely.

Step 6: Place It on the Windowsill and Enjoy!

Place it in a spot where it will get lots of sun.

Natural sun light shining through the glass jar is so heart warming!
