Introduction: Maxi Skirt With Split

About: I just love to make things and sharing that with whoever want to know.

I have really been into making skirts for the summer. I made this skirt so that it could be worn on hips or as a high waisted skirt, but this may not work as well for some people taller than me. When you make your own clothes it’s always so much more comfortable to wear, because it is made to fit you and only you. Whenever I make clothes for myself it feels like I am wearing nothing. I feel like everything should be this way. So just read along and/or watch my video so you can make this same skirt.

Supplies

  • At least 1 ¼ yrds of knit fabric 60” in width
  • *Double fabric for larger sizes or fuller look
  • Cutting tool
  • Ruler
  • Measuring tape
  • Tread
  • Elastic * medium- loose stretch
  • Iron
  • Cutting mat if you are using a rotary cutter

Step 1: Cutting to Size

  1. The first thing that needs to be done is cutting your fabric to size. For me the easiest way to do this was to fold the fabric to a smaller size, making sure that everything was as straight as possible.
  2. Take a measuring tape measure from the smallest part of your waist and measure to just past your ankle. Then add 3 1/2” to that measurement.* This will change if the elastic is thicker than what I used.
  3. If it wasn’t been done already cut of any areas of the fabric you don’t need, the edge on the width of the fabric.
  4. Use your measuring tape to make off the length it needs to be. Use a rule to try and keep the line as straight as possible. Do this for all sides of the fabric.

Step 2: Iron and Hem

  1. Starting on either side of the width of the fabric fold over and iron ¼”. Then repeat this one more time.
  2. Once both sides are done take it to the sewing machine and use either a straight stitch or “dotted zig zag stitch” to hem it.
  3. Repeat this step for the bottom of your skirt as well.
  4. Overlap the two sided of fabric so that the seams line up. Sew them together to as far down as comfortable for the split.
  5. For the top of the skirt fold over and iron ½” of the fabric. Then fold over the fabric the width of you elastic plus ¼ and iron.
  6. Sew this close ¼”from the edge, pulling slightly to prevent the thread from breaking, but leave a 2”-3” whole to feed elastic though.

Step 3: Finishing Up

  1. Measure around waist with elastic so that it sits snug around it, and then pull to hips to make sure it is not too tight.
  2. Cut the elastic to that size leaving a little to overlap to two ends.
  3. Now take a safety pin, use it to feed the elastic through the casing. Make sure the elastic is straight before sewing to ends together using a zig zag stitch.
  4. Close the casing and evenly space out the fabric around the elastic.

* You can choose to leave this step out, but if you don’t want to elastic to roll add some stitches to hold it in place. Do this by stretching the fabric and elastic till it lays flat and sew a straight line all the way around. Use two or three lines if your Elastic is thicker.

Now you have you very own skirt to wear all spring and summer. You can always use this method with other fabrics like cotton, linen, chiffon even tulle.

I would love to see pictures if you make this. Have fun!
