Introduction: Merging Audio and Video Clips in Premiere Pro

When recording video with external microphones or boom, here's a how-to sync the higher quality audio with your imaging.

Step 1: Import Your Files Into Premiere Pro

  1. Select File, in the drop down menu select Import
  2. Import your preferred media from your computer or external storage device. Once files are selected, push Import.

Step 2: Select Clips You Would Like to Merge

  1. Your imported files will appear in the Bin folder. Highlight the audio clips and video that you would like to select, and right click on the group.
  2. A drop down menu will appear, choose the Merge Clips option towards the bottom of the menu.

**Note: in this example I am merging 3 audio files to 1 video file, and this is because I used 3 microphones to film an interview between two subjects. The 3 audio channels are from 2 lappelle microphones and a room mic set up above them. These same steps can be used to file one or 3+ audio files, so long as they were recorded at the same time.

Step 3: Confirm the Merge Clip

  1. Once you click Merge Clips, a window will emerge asking you to rename the file. Select your new name.
  2. Next, you may set up the preferences on how to merge. I recommend the Audio merge for cases of speech heavy audio files (the other options of Timecode and In/ Out Points can also be used, though primarily if there is a large distinguishable point in the audio (ie a time clapper, opening mic check etc). I have had the most success with Audio option when using a variety of audio recordings.
  3. After choosing your settings, select OK.

Step 4: View Your Newly Created Merged Clip

  1. In the same window where your original audio and video file were, there will be a new file that you've just named/ created. Click on the file to review and enjoy!
