Introduction: Mike D's Salisbury Steak

One of my favorite comfort meals has to be salisbury steak. It was always one of my favorite school meals and then about 3 years ago I decided to make a more adult version from scratch to replace the lackluster frozen patties. I was able to luckily nail down a recipe I enjoy and they always come out super tender. It's not very hard at all, uses very few ingredients and should take less than 30 minutes to make.

Step 1: Ingredients

I've been cooking homemade meals for 15 years now, so I never really measure anything out so each batch is different. I'll try my best to estimate out what I usually use, but feel free to adjust to your tastes.
1 pound of ground beef (i prefer fattier meat so I go with 80-20)

1 small onion or half a large onion

1 clove of garlic

1 tsp salt

1 tsp ground pepper

1 tsp crushed red pepper

1 tsp cumin

2 Tblsp Worcestershire sauce

1 egg

1/2 cup of breadcrumbs

1 can or jar of beef gravy

Step 2: Preperation

Begin by grating the onion. You could finely mince the onion but I have found that every time I have tried mincing the onion rather than grating it, it has always resulted in a crumbling patty. Add onion to bowl with meat.

Finely mince garlic and add to bowl.

Add the rest of the ingredients to bowl (minus the gravy).

Mix up well by hand but do not overmix. Once all items are evenly distributed, stop mixing.

Now you may form into patties.

Step 3: Pan Frying

Heat saute pan over medium heat, add about a tbls of olive oil and then add patties.

Sear on first side for about 2-3 minutes. You can now take your spatula and take a look to see if they have a nice brown crust. If so, use spatula to flip patty to other side.

Give the other side another 2-3 minutes to sear a crust.

(At this point I would make a gravy, but as I have moved into new place recently I have not restocked my pantry and did not have flour. What I did have though was a jar of Heinz beef gravy. I may edit this one day to include gravy making.)

Add your jar/can of gravy to pan, lower heat to a simmer, and cover. Continue to simmer for 10 minutes.

Step 4: Serve

You may now plate up your salisbury steak and enjoy!

I paired mine with homemade whipped potatoes and fresh sauteed garlic green beans (which the beans came out of my garden not even an hour before hand!)

I hope ya'll enjoy my Instuctable as much as I enjoy the recipe!
