Introduction: Mini Me Doll

About: I am an artist living and teaching ART in NYC for over 30 years, and I am a CZT, Certified Zentangle Teacher. I love to explore all sorts of art making both in my teaching and in my own work...check out my sit…

Make a small version of yourself by sewing a Mini-Me Doll. It is a fun, easy, activity and something to snuggle with in the cold of winter if you happen to find yourself alone!
I use both a sewing machine and hand stitching to create this doll.

Step 1: Supplies

Fabric, 24X48 muslin (also assorted remnants for the clothing)
thread
needles
straight pins
ruler
sewing machine
light weight paper to make pattern
marker
inkjet phot otransfer paper
color inkjet printer
scissors
fiber fill
camera (or I used my photo-booth on my computer)
and an iron

Step 2: Pattern for Body

create pattern and place on muslin

Step 3: Pin

Pin pattern to fabric, be sure the fabric is folded so that you are actually making  2 pieces.

Step 4: Cut

carefully cut the figure

Step 5: Sewing

I use a sewing machine to sew around the outside edge of the figure, leave an opening in the side to turn the fabric right side out and also to eventually stuff.

Step 6: Turn

turn fabric of the figure right side out

Step 7: Face

Get a photograph for the face, I used the photo-booth app on my computer, made the portrait and sent it to i-photo.

Step 8: Printer

From i-photo I sent the image to my color ink jet printer. I printed it on iron on transfer paper.

Step 9: Cut the Face

carefully cut the face from the photograph

Step 10: Iron

line up the photograph to fill the area of the doll that will create the head

Step 11: Iron

Using a very high heat iron the transfer to the fabric

Step 12: Peel

Let the paper cool and then peel the backing off the transfer paper

Step 13: Face

Your mini-me has a face

Step 14: Stuff

Begin stuffing the legs of your doll.

Step 15: Head

Next stuff the head

Step 16: Chest

finally fill in the chest, add quite a bit of stuffing especially in the neck area, otherwise the head will flop over!

Step 17: Sew Opening

pin the open area closed and hand stitch to secure the closure.

Step 18: Arms

pin and cut the arms, again be sure to fold fabric, you will end up with 4 arm shapes.

Step 19: Arms

using machine sew outside edge of arms, leaving an opening at the top

Step 20: Arms

turn right side out and add stuffing

Step 21: Arms

pin and stitch the opening in the arms

Step 22: Arms

sew arms to body

Step 23: Doll Body Is Done

Step 24: Making a Dress

on folded fabric pin a dress pattern according to design and measurements mentioned, cut fabric.

Step 25: Trim

On wrong side of fabric, turn in an edge across the top or neckline of the dress,

Step 26: Stitching

right sides together stitch about 2.5 inched across each shoulder area, then open fabric flat and turn up an edge around sleves as you did on the neck

Step 27: Stitch Sides

stitch the sides of the dress from the armpit to the hemline, then turn up a little edge around the bottom of the dress to make a hem.

Step 28: More Clothing

turn the dress right side out and dress your mini me doll. I like to tie a ribbon around the middle to act as a belt>

Step 29: More Clothing

You can design and sew a lot of different outfits for yourself!
this is an example of a  lovely pants suit.
