Introduction: Miniature Grandfather Clock

Grandfather clock are my favorite form of clock, only I have absolutely no room for one. But I do have room for a 1:12 scale grandfather clock! In this Instructable I create a miniature working grandfather clock.

Supplies

Materials:

-Paper

-Tape

-1/16 Sheet of Balsa Wood

-Supper Glue

-Hot Glue

-Jump Ring

-Wood Stain

-Clear Plastic Sheet

Tools:

-Laser Cutter

-Scissors

-Sandpaper

Step 1: The Mock-Up

I created a mock-up to have a good visual and to make sure everything would fit just right. To make the mock-up I used paper that I cut to size and taped it together. Then I wrote down the dimensions on a separate peace of paper. I was just going off a picture I found of a grandfather clock as a reference, though I improvised a bit to make it how I wanted it to look.

Step 2: Cutting the Pieces

Scan all the pieces and cut them with a laser cutter onto a sheet of balsa wood.

Step 3: Assembly

Take all the pieces and lightly sanded the edges to remove the burn marks. For the top piece since it is curved I soaked it in hot water for ten minutes then a bent it around a bottle cap, and left it over night to dry. Take all the pieces and very carefully superglued all them together, except the door.

Step 4: Staining

I tested all the wood stain in my house on some scrap pieces of balsa wood. I ended up using Red Oak. Then after stirring thoroughly and using a sponge brush, I generously brushed on the stain over the hole thing. After drying over night, I applied a second coat.

Step 5: The Pendulum

For the Pendulum stared by filling a jump ring with a blob of hot glue. Then superglues the jump-ring/hot-glue-blob to a stick. The stick I used was just a scrap piece I found. Then paint it gold. I put on two coats of gold. Once it is dry glued it into the clock.

Step 6: Finish the Door and Put in the Clock

Then glue a plastic sheet under the door and glued the door onto the clock. Then the last step is to put in the clock. I used a little working clock that I found in my room.
