Intro: Motor Over Heating? Cool It Down Instantly for Electric RC Cars

STEP 1: Find Your Cars Make and Model

Ok there are many different kinds of RC brands and cars. I have a Traxxas Stampede and I will recommend Traxxas to anyone. If you need parts try your local hobby shop. MY FAVORITE ONE IS www.larrys-rc.com or Larry's RC.

STEP 2: Find the Problem

Ya ya ya I know your going to tell me that your problem is your motor is over heating. We need to know what is causing it!!! It could be a simple spur gear that is problem. (Over-gearing/under-gearing) or it can also be that you are running your motor to hard. Or you could have the wrong motor in your car. Anyway I have solutions for all of these!!!

STEP 3: Over/under Gearing

To find out if you are over or under gearing your car you can take off the gear cover (on Traxxas's) or what ever protects your gears. Look at your pinion gear and look at the number on it. Say you have a 12t motor and your pinion says 23 you are over gearing. This will over heat your motor alot. For a 12t a good pinion is about 18 or 19. If you have a different kind of motor tell me in the comments and I will try to tell what a good one would be! This helped my car ALOT my motor doesn't get hot anymore.

STEP 4: Running Your Car to Hard

Depending on your car, you can work your car to hard and even know it. If you run your car in the grass it can dramatically increase your motor temperature. Another way is running your car at its highest speed the stopping and then turning and then full speed again. This can over heat your esc to. Last but not least don't hold the throttle well in the air like on a jump don't keep excelerating

STEP 5: Finding the Right Motor

Finding your RC cars right motor is important! Would you put a GMC v8 in a Honda? So don't put a brushless fireball 21d motor in a TRAXXAS 12t car. Refer to your RC car manual.

STEP 6: Ventilation

Some time your cars body isn't getting the proper air flow it is soposed to in order to cool down your ESC and motor. For this you need to brake out your trusty and possibly rusty power tools! Simply cut a vent in the top/were your esc and motor are so fresh air can cycle through! DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!! I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY MISTAKES OR ACCIDENTS!!! See my pics.

STEP 7: Extras

I love rc cars and I have the Traxxas Stampede. It is a old one though, because it has the 27mhz radio system. My car have overheated multiple times, so thank you for the great advice!

Hello I have a Traxxas slash 4x4 that I bought recently when I run it on 3s it gets soo hot after 10mins that I have to stop and wait for 20 mins for the car to cool down. It becomes frustrating and makes me want to sell the car do you know what I can do so that I don’t have that problem anymore? Help will be much appreciated

I have a Hobbywing Ezrun Victory 8.5T 4000kv motor and my pinion gear is 21T. My ESC is hobbywing Ezrun SL 60A. My motor is heating? what should be right size pinion I have to use?

Hi, I was just reading on your solusions on cooling down the esc/motor temps. I have a stampede that I am hopping up, I run tires/wheels off the wheely king for better grip, I have installed integy front/rear ext. upper/lower control arms, steel driveshafts, alum. hub carriers, steering blocks, & casters. I had a castle es3/5700kv motor laying around so I put it in the truck(it hauls) planning to install alum.chassis plate, gearbox, bulkhead, skids,& shock towers over time. With this esc/motor in it it to shuts down alot, the motor gets really hot (not sure of temp)it has the 90t spur & I have a 22t spur in it now, if I loosen the slipper it gets so hot it accually melted the gearbox. I have a fan on the motor but doesn't seem to cool it down enough! Is this motor not a good fit for this truck or would it just be that it is geared wrong? Thanks, James

Hi james.
You have a very powerfull motor in your stampede. Do you use your stampede on grass or tarmac, if you use it on grass you need to get a diffrent motor as a motor with such high kv is meant for tarmac only. You should also check your gear mesh. A gear mesh to tight will create alot of heat and resistance (watch a youtube video. On how to set gear mesh. Make sure your slipper clutch isnt too loose, when you do a hard accelaration you should hear the slipper slip for about 2 meters. If none of that works consider your gearing ratio.

I am running brushed motor with a 46t main and a 16t spur, any suggestions as i cant change the 46 as this is my only option with this truck.

Most rc goers don't really have brush motors anymore it more leaning over to brushless motors and also If you also want to find out what kind of battery that your using and what kv is the motor so thus make shure that your car can handle it and that's not enough you always add a fan to your esc ad a heatsink to your motor to keep it cooler in the summers
