Introduction: Mp3 Player Knot
This is how I put away my mp3 player. This way I do not have to deal with inextricable knots next time I want to use it. Since I am not good with words here is a video. enjoy.
This may increase the chance of fracturing the inside cables which is bad for your headphone cord.

While I can't watch the video from work, it looks to be a hangman's noose type of knot? If it isn't you can use a loose version of that without it causing sharp bends or anything that would damage the cord. I loosely flip the cord back on the player, then wrap the cord around the body (going over the cord as well) until I'm at the end of the cord, then tuck the buds under the first loop and pull a little on the original end of the cord (still attached to the player) to tighten it a little, and it all holds into place. Again sorry if this is what your video is showing, I can't watch from work. It would just be a "looser" version of what your picture seems to show.

That knot's what people use to keep the ends of rope from fraying. The headphones are instead a thinner peice of twine than what the rope is. I never would have thought of applying it to an mp3 player/headphones. Neat-o.

Hehe, thank you. I got this idea from rock climbing.

cables are meant to bend... everyone's seen coiled mic line (XLR) the trick is to wind it consistently so the interior wires are pulled in different ways each time, leading to breaks. the cool part of this is doing it quickly, storing your cables on the go... however, it seems like if you put a little thought and time into coiling it according to a pattern it could be okay for longer. plus, come on... they're cheap-o headphones in the first place. it'll take some time to break them, and were you expecting them to last forever anyway?

oops... i mean to say that the interior wires AREN'T pulled in different ways, ack... sorry... and i forgot to say awesome post, i'm totally using it...

I reckon that is mad!!! I have a zen v and it's always getting tangled in my pocket.

That will totally screw up the chord, because the right bends cause the cable to fray on the inside. I used to wrap my ipod headphones tight, and their inner wiring is all cloth/mesh cable, so it quickly broke. Never wrap them tightly.

thats just like.. really bad for your headphone cord? if you wrap it like that you increase the chance of fracturing the inside cables. so maybe you can add that to your instructable.
