Step 1: Cut MDF Frames to Size

  1. Marking Frame Layout on MDF
  2. Use pencil and ruler to draw layout on 2ft x 2ft MDF board.
  3. Frame sizes:
  4. Small frames: 6” height × 4.5” width → make 4 pieces.
  5. Big frames: 9.5” height × 6” width → make 2 pieces.
  6. Cut Out Frames
  7. Use an MDF cutter to carefully cut out the 6 marked rectangles.
  8. Sand the edges if needed for a smooth finish.

  1. Tip: Always cut on a safe surface with proper hand support to avoid chipping MDF.

Step 2: Draw Your String Art Design

  1. Design Planning
  2. Decide on the pattern for each frame.
  3. Small Frames: Flower patterns (use curves, petals, spirals).
  4. Big Frames: Vase outline (a container shape to insert real flowers).
  5. Drawing
  6. Use pencil to sketch the string art outlines on each MDF piece.
  7. You can use stencils or printouts to trace symmetrical designs.

  1. My plan is to draw Flowers on small MDF pieces and Vase design on Big piece for place actual flowers inside them.

  1. Be creative! Personalize your designs with initials, mandalas, or geometric shapes.

Step 3: Mark and Insert Nails

  1. Spacing & Placement
  2. Mark nail spots along the design at 1-inch intervals.
  3. Ensure the distance is uniform to maintain symmetry in yarn wrapping.
  4. Nailing
  5. Use small nails and a plastic mallet to drive the nails halfway into the MDF.
  6. Follow the shape contour closely.
  7. Repeat for all 6 frames.

  1. Safety Note: Do not hammer too deep—leave about 2/3 of the nail visible for yarn looping.

Step 4: Attach Decorative Borders

Frame Bordering

  1. Use ice cream sticks to create a wooden border around each MDF piece.
  2. Cut or trim sticks as needed for corners.

Optional Painting

  1. Paint sticks before attaching for color contrast.

Fixing

  1. Use quick adhesive to glue the sticks onto the MDF edge.
  2. Let dry for 15–30 minutes.

Step 5: Create and Attach Frame Supports

Big Frame Support (4 Pieces)

  1. Cut a 12” x 10” MDF board into 12 strips of 12” x 18mm each.
  2. Cut 8 pieces of 80mm x 18mm from these strips.
  3. Join in pairs and trim ends to 30° angles.
  4. These form the back supports for standing big frames.

Small Frame Support (8 Pieces)

  1. Cut strips into 50mm x 15mm rectangles.
  2. Join 2 pieces at a right angle and trim top into triangle shape using a paper cutter.
  3. Glue triangle on top of rectangle to form easel-like support.

--These supports allow your frames to stand upright on flat surfaces like tables or shelves.

You will attach support at the end of all the steps.

Step 6: Start String Art

  1. Choose Your Yarn Colors
  2. Mix and match bright and pastel colors like:
  3. Light Blue
  4. Orange
  5. White
  6. Off-white
  7. Violet
  8. Red
  9. Light Green
  10. Start Wrapping
  11. Tie one end of the yarn to the first nail.
  12. Wrap yarn from nail to nail in a consistent pattern.
  13. Fill in shapes or follow lines depending on the design.
  14. Secure End
  15. Tie off the yarn securely and trim the excess.
  16. Use a small glue dab on knots for extra hold.

-- Experiment with layering colors to give a 3D gradient or floral effect.

Step 7: Add Sidearms for Hanging Accessories

  1. Using Spare MDF Strips
  2. Take leftover 12” × 18mm strips.
  3. Cut to desired lengths for sidearms .
  4. Glue horizontally or angled behind the frame.
  5. Functionality
  6. These arms can hold:
  7. Rings
