Some people like having their car beep when they lock or unlock it. Most new cars and trucks have this feature. I do not like this feature. I think it is noise pollution and it draws unwanted attention to you and your car. At first, I was looking at how to disconnect the horn to keep it from beeping, but if I did this, my horn would not work. I searched the internet for a solution and discovered that most cars can be programmed to mute the beep when locking and unlocking. I was able to find this procedure in my car's owner's manual. If you can not find how to do this in your car's owner's manual, you can probably find it on the internet. I will show you how to mute the lock beep in a 2009 Subaru Outback. It will seam strange, but it is a list of procedures that you have to follow to program the car's computer to mute the beep. I think the car manufacturers make it complicated so you can't do it accidentally or so that you have to pay the dealer to do it for you.

Step 1: Get in the Car

You have to sit in the driver's seat and have your car key ready.

Step 2: Push the Unlock Button

Make sure all the doors are closed, including the tailgate. Push the unlock side of the power door lock switch.

Step 3: Insert the Key

Insert the key into the ignition switch.

Step 4: Here Comes the Crazy Part

This is the part that seams really crazy. While holding down on the unlock switch, remove and insert the key into and out of the ignition switch at least five times within ten seconds. Ending with leaving the key in the ignition switch.

Step 5: Get Out and Close the Door

With the key in the ignition switch, and within ten seconds of the last step, get out of the car and close the door. If you have done everything right, the hazard lights should flash three times. If you want to reverse this and go back to having the beeps, do the procedure again, only this time the lights will flash three times and the horn will beep three times as well.
