Introduction: Naan Sandwich

Today I am going to show you how to make a naan sandwich. This is really nice as the main part of a family meal, or could be a delicious lunch when sliced. I hope you enjoy.

Step 1: Ingredients

To make the naan you will need:

  • 225 mls (7.6 oz) of sourdough mother culture
  • 290 grams (10 oz) of flour
  • 50 grams (1.8 oz) of butter
  • 1 tablespoon of yogurt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt

Filling

  • Of your choice - we used some left over curry, but try using a meat stew, sliced steak, or chickpea filling of your own design.

Step 2: Mixing

Melt the butter then in a bowl mix in the yogurt, add the eggs and sourdough starter and mix to combine. Once you have mixed in the eggs and starter sieve the flour into the mixture.

Step 3: Kneading

Stir the mixture with a spoon until it starts to form a dough. Dump it out onto a counter top and knead the dough until it is smooth. Grease a bowl with a little butter and leave the dough in a warm place for around six hours. When time is up give it another quick knead then the naan is ready to use.

Step 4: Flavoring the Naan

You will need:

  • 2 tablespoons Italian parsley
  • 1/4 teaspoon crushed garlic
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds

Step 5: Rolling and Coating

Separate the dough into two parts and roll each out into large rectangle using a rolling pin.

Mix the butter and parsley together then spread it onto the top of the two naan rectangles.

Step 6: Layering

Fold all of the corners across each other until it forms a square. Re-roll the naan out and apply the butter coating. Repeat this process until most of the butter/parsley mix is used up, leave a little bit to put on both sides when cooking. Repeat this process with your second naan until it is about the same size as the first naan.

Step 7: Getting Ready to Cook

Place the naans on a baking tray (we've covered ours with baking paper), spread the rest of the butter/parsley mix onto the naans then sprinkle on the sesame seeds. They are now reading for cooking.

Step 8: Cooking

Grill the naans until nicely browned. Keep an eye on them as they can burn quickly. Once they are cooked remove them from the oven and leave to cool on a cooling rack.

Step 9: Filling

Now it is time to fill your naan sandwich with whatever filling you want. I used some left over curry (How to make a Mutton Curry) which complemented the naan immensely. Onto one of the naans spread a generous amount of the filling of your choice.

Step 10: Baste Your Second Naan

Use up the remaining butter/parsley mix on the second naan then place it on top of the first.

Step 11: Finished

You're done!

Now that your naan sandwich is completed it is time to enjoy with your own delicious left-over alternative fillings.
