Introduction: Nintendo Switch Tournament Console

Today we are going take the following items:

And place them into:

This is a completely non-destructive process. If you want to put everything back in it's original enclosures at some point in the future, you can do so... provided you keep all the old parts stored somewhere.

Supplies

  • Precision Tri-wing Y#0 Screwdriver (https://amzn.to/2Oi1bvo)
  • Precision Phillips PH#000 Screwdriver (https://amzn.to/2Oi1bvo)
  • A metal separation tool is also needed. I am using the scraping tool which came with my 3D printer; but you can use a utility knife if that's all you have available. If your finger nails are strong enough, you could use that too.
  • Needle nose pliers are also recommended to make it easier to manipulate some of the smaller parts, but are not required.

Step 1: Taking Apart the Nintendo Switch Dock (Part 1)

Image 1:

  • Open the flap on the back of the dock to expose the back plate.
  • Find and remove the 8 screws using your Y#0 Screwdriver.
  • Pull the back plate off the dock.

Image 2:

  • Gently lift the black clasp on the circuit board and disconnect the pink/silver ribbon cable.
  • Push in the two teeth on the circuit board and gently lift the board off the dock.
  • Using your pliers, disconnect the molex cable from the underside of the circuit board.
  • Place the main circuit board aside, in a safe location.

Image 3:

  • Find and remove the 3 visible screws using your PH#000 Screwdriver.
  • Find and remove 6 more sunk screws using your PH#000 Screwdriver.
  • Firmly separate the two halves of the dock from each other.

Image 4:

  • Use a finger nail to gently push the clear LED diffuser from the front side of the dock.
  • Be very careful when doing this, as too much force can damage the LED.
  • Using your pliers, pull the LED circuit board and diffuser from the dock.
  • Place the LED circuit board and diffuser aside, in a safe location.

Image 5:

  • Lets take stock of where we are at the moment with all the primary pieces separated.

Step 2: Taking Apart the Nintendo Switch Dock (Part 2)

Image 1:

  • Separate the bottom piece from the remaining dock pieces.
  • Find and remove the 4 sunk screws using your PH#000 Screwdriver.
  • Remove the spring plate from the rest of the parts.

Image 2:

  • Remove the small plastic static shock guard from the USB-C connector.
  • Find and remove the 2 visible screws using your PH#000 Screwdriver.
  • Separate the USB-C circuit board from the spring plate.
  • Place the small plastic static shock guard back on the USB-C connector.

Image 3:

  • We are now done taking apart the Nintendo Switch Dock.
  • You should have the following parts:
    • Main circuit board
    • LED circuit board with molex connector
    • LED diffuser
    • USB-C circuit board with ribbon cable

Step 3: Taking Apart the Nintendo GameCube Adapter

Image 1:

  • Find and remove the 4 sunk screws using your Y#0 Screwdriver.
  • Separate the two halves of the GameCube adapter.

Image 2:

  • Place the circuit board aside, in a safe location.

Step 4: Taking Apart the Sabrent 4-port USB Hub

Image 1:

  • Using your separator tool, gently split the two halves of the hub.

Image 2:

  • Place the circuit board aside, in a safe location.

Step 5: Taking Stock of Where We Are At...

We can now put together all the parts we've taken out of their various enclosures. Everything will be placed into the new console. Make sure you have everything and haven't misplacing anything; especially the LED diffuser.

Step 6: Putting the Dock Into the Console

Image 1:

  • Reconnect the ribbon cable to the main circuit board.
  • Make sure the cable is pink side up, as in the photo.
  • Closing the clasp on circuit board should hold the ribbon cable in place.

Image 2:

  • Slide and snap the main circuit board in place on the bottom half the console.
  • You will need a small amount of force to snap the board into place.

Image 3:

  • Place the LED diffuser (arm-side-up) in it's slot on the console.
  • Pliers will make it easier to put the diffuser exactly where it needs to be.

Image 4:

  • Place the LED circuit board up and against the LED diffuser.
  • Be careful not to damage the LED when you are putting it on the diffuser.
  • The LED circuit board will not be secure until it is locked in the next step.

Image 5:

  • Place the first lock around the LED assembly.
  • Make sure the lock holds the circuit board and diffuser in place.
  • Push down on the lock on both sides till it "clicks" on each end.

Image 6:

  • Twist the ribbon cable and place the USB-C circuit board in the plug slot.
  • Be gentle with the ribbon cable when twisting it; just keep it nice and neat.
  • Make sure the USB-C circuit board is between the walls of the plug slot.

Image 7:

  • Place the second lock around the USB-C assembly.
  • Push down on the lock on both sides till it "clicks" on each end.

Step 7: Putting the Hub Into the Console

Image 1:

  • Slide and snap the USB Hub into the front of the console.
  • This is actually a tight fit. If needed, you can use your separator tool to "shoe-horn" the USB ports into the holes. You should only need to shoe-horn in one of the USB ports, the rest will follow in naturally.

Image 2:

  • Route the cable for the Hub through the console and out the back.
  • Plug the Hub into the USB port in the back of the dock main circuit board.
  • Push the cable the Hub into the small hole cutout above the USB port.

Step 8: Putting the Adapter Into the Console

Image 1:

  • Slide and snap the GameCube Adapter into the front of the console.
  • Feed the adapter cable through the small hole above the adapter.

Image 2:

  • Plug the adapter cable into the two remaining USB ports on the main circuit board.

Step 9: Closing It All Up...

Image 1:

  • Take the two halves of the console and place them on top of each other.
  • Turn over the console and screw in the four included thumb screws.

Image 2:

  • Neatly organize the adapter cable in the top compartment.
  • Make sure the cable wont push up against the top of the console.

Image 3:

  • Snap the top plate into the four grooves in the top compartment.

That's it! You're done! The power, HDMI and extension cable all plug into the back of the console.
